Find a name for an employee resource group (ERG), affinity group, business resource group or employee network. The list mixes plain names like Veterans Alliance and Working Parents Network, one-word brands like Mosaic and Tapestry, and spelled-out backronyms like RISE (Respect, Inclusion, Support, Equity).

About employee resource group names

An employee resource group, or ERG, is an employee-led group built around a shared identity, life stage or interest. Companies also call them affinity groups, business resource groups (BRGs) or employee networks, and the names follow a small set of patterns. The plainest one says who the group is for and what kind of group it is: Black Employee Network, Veterans Alliance, Working Parents Network. It is easy to find in a directory and needs no explanation.

The second pattern is a brand word: Mosaic, Tapestry, Kindred, Confluence. A brand word looks good on a banner or a channel name, but it usually needs a descriptive line under it. Backronyms sit in between. RISE (Respect, Inclusion, Support, Equity) and PACE (Pan-Asian Community of Employees) are short to say and still carry the meaning, and every one here is listed with its expansion so you can see how the letters line up.

The list also holds "at Work" forms such as Parents at Work, words many employers share from Spanish and Swahili such as Unidos and Umoja, and umbrella names for a whole ERG program, such as Belonging Networks. Styles are mixed through the list, so each batch shows several approaches at once.

How to choose employee resource group names

  • Ask the members first. A name the group chooses for itself lasts longer than one handed down, so bring three or four candidates from this list to a vote.
  • Pair a brand word with a plain descriptor. Mosaic on its own could be anything; "Mosaic: Multicultural Employee Alliance" tells a new hire what the group is.
  • Test a backronym both ways. Say the short form out loud, then read the expansion and make sure no word feels forced in just to fit a letter.
  • Use the terms the community uses for itself today, and ask members where usage differs by region or generation, for example Latino, Latina, Latinx or Hispanic.
  • Search your own intranet and your industry before you commit. Many of these words are shared across employers, so make sure the name does not collide with another team, product or program where you work.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for an employee resource group?

A good ERG name tells a new colleague who the group is for and sounds like something members would say with pride. Plain names such as Women in Leadership Network or Disability Inclusion Network are the easiest to find in a directory, while brand words such as Kaleidoscope or Beacon work well once the group is known. Many groups use both: a short brand with a descriptive line under it.

What is the difference between an ERG, a BRG and an affinity group?

The terms overlap and companies use them in their own ways. Affinity group is the older and more general term, employee resource group is the most common one today, and business resource group is often chosen where the groups are expected to tie their work to business goals. The naming patterns are the same, so the names here suit any of the three.

How do the backronyms on this list work?

Each one is listed with its expansion, for example LEAD (Listening, Equity, Allyship, Development) and HOPE (Helping Our People Excel). Small joining words such as "and", "of" and "for" are skipped unless they are capitalized, which is the usual convention. You can swap a word for one that fits your group better as long as the initial stays the same.

What do you call the program that all the ERGs belong to?

Most companies give the whole program an umbrella name so the groups can be listed together. Options on this list include Belonging Networks, Employee Community Networks, The ERG Commons and Network of Networks. Keep the umbrella plainer than the group names so it does not compete with them.
