Slack Channel Name Generator

Slack channel names are lowercase, use hyphens instead of spaces, and are capped at 80 characters, but the workspaces that stay usable past fifty channels share a stricter habit: a prefix system. Purpose prefixes like team-, proj-, help-, alerts-, ext- and erg- group channels together in the sidebar and search, so #help-it sits next to #help-hr and every project channel is findable by typing 'proj-'. The names in this generator follow that pattern, mixed with the unprefixed staples every workspace has (#general, #announcements, #random, #wins).

A good channel name answers two questions in a glance: who is it for and what goes in it. #eng-oncall is better than #oncall if you have several on-call rotations, and #proj-checkout-v2 is better than #checkout because it will be archived when the project ships. Social channels can be looser and funnier (#dogs-of-slack, #shower-thoughts, #whiskey-wednesday) because nobody needs to search for them.

Use the list to fill out a new workspace, standardize an old one, or find a name for a one-off channel. Pair the channel name with a one-line topic and description so new members know the rules without asking, and archive rather than rename when a project ends so history stays searchable.
