About business team names

A business team name has to survive two very different settings: the top of a slide deck and a Slack channel. The names that work in both are short, say something about what the team does or how it works, and do not embarrass anyone when a client reads them. They tend to come in a few shapes. Descriptive names (The Closers Club, Customer Success Squad, Supply Chain Gang) tell outsiders what you do. Aspirational names (Summit Collective, Momentum Makers, Force Multipliers) describe how you want to be seen. Code names (Project Keystone, Team Atlas, Operation Overdrive) are for temporary task forces and cross-functional projects. Puns (Commission Impossible, Per My Last Email, Pay Per Clique) belong to hackathons, sales kickoffs and team-building days, where the name is half the fun.

The list runs roughly in that order: leadership and general-purpose names, then sales, finance, marketing, HR, operations, customer support, IT and product, data, legal, startup teams, office humor, code names and motivational picks. Most are written as "The X" or "X Crew" because that is how teams actually get referred to in meetings. Swap the noun (Crew, Squad, Collective, Unit) to match your company's tone, or drop it entirely for a name like Momentum or True North.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to its audience. A name that appears in board decks and client emails should be descriptive or aspirational; save the puns for internal channels, competitions and offsites.
  • Keep it to two or three words. Long names get abbreviated to initials within a week, and initials like CSS or HR2 tell nobody anything.
  • Avoid names that date quickly, like a current quarter, a product version or a joke about this year's reorg. The best team names still make sense after the team changes members.
  • Check that the name is not already used by another team, an internal tool or a competitor's product. A quick search in your company directory and chat tool takes a minute and avoids confusion.
  • If the team has a mission statement or a key metric, build the name around that. North Star Metric, Churn Burners and Quota Crushers all remind people what the team is for.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good business team name?

A good business team name is short, easy to say in a meeting and says something true about the team: what it does (Supply Chain Gang), how it works (Rapid Response) or what it is aiming for (Summit Collective). It should still make sense to a new hire or a client who has no context, and it should not rely on an inside joke that will be stale in six months.

Should a corporate team name be funny or professional?

It depends where the name will appear. Teams that are named in client-facing documents, org charts or executive updates usually do better with professional or aspirational names. Teams formed for a hackathon, sales kickoff, charity walk or team-building competition can go as punny as they like, since the name is part of the event. Many companies use both: a formal name on the org chart and a nickname in chat.

How do I name a sales, marketing or finance team specifically?

Pick a word or concept that belongs to that department and build around it. Sales teams lean on closing, quotas and pipelines (The Closers Club, Pipeline Pirates); marketing teams on brand, reach and conversion (Brand Builders, Conversion Kings); finance teams on ledgers, margins and audits (Ledger Legends, Margin Callers). The list is grouped by department so you can skim straight to yours.

Can I use these names for a company team-building event or competition?

Yes. The office humor and code-name sections were written with team-building days, trivia nights, hackathons and internal competitions in mind. They are free to use, and you can mix a department name with a pun, for example Finance: Cents and Sensibility versus Marketing: Pay Per Clique, to keep the rivalry friendly.
