Generate Dragonlance names that sound native to Krynn: Solamnic knights with uth patronymics, Silvanesti and Qualinesti elves, Que-Shu plainsfolk, hill dwarves, kender, draconians, minotaurs, and the dragons and gods of Ansalon.

About Dragonlance names

Dragonlance names carry the flavor of Krynn's distinct peoples, and each one follows its own rules. Solamnic knights use a given name plus a family name, often joined by the honorific "uth" (Gunthar uth Wistan, Kitiara uth Matar), with surnames like Brightblade and Crownguard that read as old-blood heraldry. Silvanesti and Qualinesti elves favor long, flowing names with -thas, -anas, -iel and -ana endings, frequently shortened in daily use, as Lauralanthalasa becomes Laurana. Que-Shu and other plainsfolk take nature names in Common such as Riverwind, Goldmoon and Hollow-sky.

The smaller folk have their own registers. Hill dwarves of Flint Fireforge's kind use blunt Norse-style names with a forge or stone surname, kender pair a playful given name with a surname like Burrfoot or Thistleknot, and gnomes carry names so long they go by a syllable. Draconians use harsh one-syllable names such as Kang and Slith, minotaurs use short hard names and the clan marker "Es-" or "de-", and dragons often bear a grand true name (Khellendros, Malystryx) alongside a short nickname (Skie, Malys).

This generator mixes the canon cast of the Chronicles, Legends and War of Souls eras with original names built on the same patterns, so you can populate a Dragonlance campaign, a Shadow of the Dragon Queen table, or fan fiction without breaking the setting's voice.

How to choose Dragonlance names

  • Decide the character's homeland first: a Solamnic knight, a Silvanesti elf and a Que-Shu plainsman should never sound alike, and mixing patterns is the fastest way to break immersion.
  • For knights, add "uth" only to old families and keep the surname evocative of arms or virtue (Brightblade, Tallbow, Crownguard); squires and newer houses often go without it.
  • Give elves a long formal name for ceremony and a short one for friends, the way Lauralanthalasa is Laurana and Gilthanas is Gil; it adds realism in dialogue.
  • Kender surnames should hint at wandering or mischief (Burrfoot, Thistleknot, Lightfingers) and should sound cheerful, not menacing; draconian and minotaur names should do the opposite.
  • If you are running Shadow of the Dragon Queen or another War of the Lance game, avoid reusing the Heroes of the Lance as player names; borrow the structure of their names instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does "uth" mean in Dragonlance names?

Among the Knights of Solamnia, "uth" is an honorific linking a knight to an ancient noble house, as in Gunthar uth Wistan or Gerard uth Mondar. It signals lineage rather than meaning "son of," so not every Solamnic family uses it; the Brightblades, for example, do not.

How are Dragonlance elf names different from other D&D elf names?

Krynn's elves use longer, more melodic formal names built on syllables like -lanthas, -anas and -alas, and they commonly shorten them for everyday use. Silvanesti names tend toward the stately (Silvanos, Lorac Caladon, Alhana Starbreeze) while Kagonesti wild elves often take nature names closer to Common.

Can I use these names in Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow of the Dragon Queen?

Yes. The generator includes Solamnic, Abanasinian, Silvanesti, Qualinesti, hill dwarf, kender, gnome and draconian styles, which covers the player races and NPC types that appear in the 5e Dragonlance adventure. Canon names are included for reference; use the original ones for your own characters.

How do draconian and minotaur names work on Krynn?

Draconians use short, guttural names with hard consonants such as Kang, Slith, Gloth and Fulkth, often followed by their breed (Bozak, Sivak, Kapak, Baaz). Minotaurs use clipped names like Kaz and Hecar, and nobles add a clan marker such as Es-Kalin or de-Droka; emperors are addressed by title rather than family name.
