Generate names for difficulty settings, from the gentlest easy mode to the cruelest top tier: Tourist, Sunday Stroll, Seasoned, Spicy, Black Diamond, No Mercy and Sleep Is for the Weak. Useful for game developers, quiz writers, escape room hosts and trainers building a ladder of their own.

About difficulty names

A difficulty name is a promise about what the next few hours will feel like. The plain ladder of Easy, Normal and Hard does the job, but a named ladder does it with personality: a player who picks Tourist knows nobody will rush them, and a player who picks No Mercy has been told exactly what they signed up for. Whatever the joke, a newcomer should still see at a glance which rung is the gentle one and which is the top.

This list holds 1,000 single settings, one rung per entry, so you can build a ladder of three, four or five from names that share a theme. It covers classic words (Novice, Veteran, Legendary), gentle names for the easiest mode (Training Wheels, Scenic Route), brutal top tiers (Abandon Hope, Zero Forgiveness), and themed ladders by spice heat, weather, mountain trails, kitchens and school. There are genre sets for horror, fantasy, sci-fi, pirate and western games, neutral names such as Story, Balanced and Challenge, permadeath and modifier names, plus settings for trails, trivia nights and fitness classes.

A good easy mode name is warm rather than mocking. Players choose a lower setting for many reasons, from time to access needs, and a name that teases the game instead of the player keeps everyone welcome.

How to choose difficulty names

Pick one theme per ladder and keep it for every rung: Mild, Medium Heat, Extra Hot and Ghost Pepper read as a set, while mixing spice with weather muddles the order.
Make the order obvious without a legend. Show the names shuffled to someone who has not played; if they cannot sort them from easiest to hardest, change the unclear rung.
Keep the easiest name kind. Tease the setting, not the person: Scenic Route and Feet Up welcome players, while a name that mocks them punishes a reasonable choice.
Add a one-line description under each name that says what really changes (enemy damage, timers, hints, checkpoints), so the joke never hides the information.
Save the longest, loudest name for the top rung or a secret mode. A line like You Did This to Yourself lands best when the rungs below it are short.

Frequently asked questions

What are some funny difficulty level names?

For the easy end, try Sunday Stroll, Floaties On or One Hand on a Sandwich. For the middle, Some Assembly Required or Paying Attention. For the top, Hold My Controller, Sleep Is for the Weak or Even We Can't Beat It. Funny names work best when the order from gentle to brutal is still clear.

How many difficulty levels should a game have?

Three to five is the usual range. Three rungs (easy, normal, hard) are enough for most games. A fourth at the top gives returning players something to chase, and a fifth at the bottom, such as a story-focused mode, widens the audience. Beyond five, players struggle to tell neighboring settings apart.

Can I use these names for something other than a video game?

Yes. The list includes settings for hiking trails, trivia rounds, fitness classes, escape rooms and puzzle books, such as Family Loop, Lightning Round, Low Impact and Head Scratcher. A ladder of Green Circle, Blue Square and Black Diamond borrows the trail markings of North American ski areas, which many people already know how to read.

Are these difficulty names taken from real games?

The list aims at names for your own project rather than quoting famous games. Plain words that countless games share, such as Easy, Normal, Hard, Veteran and Nightmare, are in it. Some phrases here may still appear in a game somewhere, so if a name matters for a release, search for it yourself first.
