Generate names for the elites, champions and bosses of a Diablo-style action RPG. The list runs from compounds with an appellation such as Cinderjaw the Patient and bare compounds such as Mirewidow to demon officers such as Varkoth the Quartermaster and act bosses such as Kharzoth, Lord of Famine.

About Diablo monster names

Diablo names its dangerous monsters by formula, which is why they never sound like an ordinary fantasy bestiary. A roaming elite gets a two-part compound, often with an appellation after it, in the manner of Pukerat the Unclean or Rotfeast the Hungry. Leaders of the Fallen get babbling nonsense names such as Bishibosh and Rakanishu. The great evils carry a title after a comma: Andariel, Maiden of Anguish; Duriel, Lord of Pain. Diablo II assembles the names of its random elites from word tables in the game data.

This list keeps those shapes and brings its own vocabulary. Compounds are built from materials, ailments and body parts (Tallowhide, Saltmarrow, Hookrib), and the appellations lean on states and trades rather than plain menace: the Unshriven, the Bellringer, the Lamplighter. Five names are canon named monsters from Diablo II, kept as style anchors: Flamespike the Crawler, Bone Ash, Thresh Socket, Eyeback the Unleashed and Creeping Feature. Everything else is an original in the style of the series, not taken from the games.

The rest of the list covers the other ranks of a dungeon: undead lords, demon officers with a job title, broodmothers and swarm queens, fallen angels and corrupted clergy, keywardens and treasure fiends, witches, golems and siege engines, and regional elites named for the place they haunt.

How to choose Diablo monster names

  • Match the shape of the name to the rank: a bare compound for a pack leader (Slaghound), a compound with an appellation for a named elite (Hollowgut the Bellringer), and a comma title for an act boss (Kharzoth, Lord of Famine).
  • Let the appellation hint at the fight. Saltmarrow the Drowned suggests cold and water, Wickfinger the Lamplighter suggests fire, and players read that before the first hit lands.
  • To build your own, join a material or an ailment to a body part, then add an appellation that is a state or a trade instead of one more word for evil.
  • Give demon lieutenants an office, as in Varkoth the Quartermaster. A job implies a chain of command, which hands you the next three encounters of a campaign.
  • For a tabletop one-shot, start from the regional names. Dunescab of the Buried Road gives you the monster and the place to put it in one line.

Frequently asked questions

How does Diablo name its monsters?

Named elites usually get a two-part compound, sometimes followed by an appellation such as the Unclean or the Hungry. Fallen leaders get nonsense names like Bishibosh, and the Prime and Lesser Evils carry a title such as Lord of Terror or Maiden of Anguish. Diablo II builds the names of its random elites from word tables, which is why the pattern feels so consistent.

Are these names from the Diablo games?

Five of them are: Flamespike the Crawler, Bone Ash, Thresh Socket, Eyeback the Unleashed and Creeping Feature are named monsters in Diablo II. Every other name, such as Tallowhide the Unshriven, Broodmother Skirrix or Uthrek the Keywarden, is an original in the style of the series, not a name taken from the games.

Can I use these names in a mod, a tabletop game or fan fiction?

Yes, the original names are free to use in mods, homebrew campaigns, stories and your own loot-game designs. Nobody has compared this list with other games, so search for a name yourself before you put it in anything you sell. Keep the five Diablo II names for fan work.

What is the difference between an elite name and a boss name?

An elite name is short and physical, like Emberscab or Cinderjaw the Patient, because the player meets many of them. A boss name is a proper name with a title that states a domain, like Ysmaril, Maiden of Regret. Guardians sit in between and are named for their post, as in Uthrek the Keywarden.
