Generate Death Note character names for every corner of the series: canon names from the manga, anime, films and Netflix adaptation, original Japanese full names for Kira suspects, task force officers and To-Oh students, single-word Wammy's House detective aliases with their real names, and harsh, odd-sounding Shinigami names in the style of Ryuk, Rem and Sidoh.
About death note names
Death Note names come in three distinct registers, and a convincing OC has to land in the right one. The human cast is almost entirely ordinary Japanese full names, written Western-order in the English release: Light Yagami, Misa Amane, Touta Matsuda, Kiyomi Takada. Ohba and Obata picked real, slightly formal surnames and then played with the given name, which is why Light is written with the kanji for moon and read Raito, and why Teru Mikami and Kyosuke Higuchi sound like people from a Tokyo phone book. A task force officer, a To-Oh student or a Yotsuba executive should sound just as plain.
Wammy's House detectives break that pattern on purpose. They go by a single word or letter and hide a Western real name underneath: L is L Lawliet, Near is Nate River, Mello is Mihael Keehl, Matt is Mail Jeevas, and the earlier generation were simply A and B. L layers further aliases on top (Ryuzaki, Hideki Ryuga, Eraldo Coil, Deneuve).
Shinigami names are a third thing entirely: short, guttural, and a little ridiculous. Ryuk, Rem, Sidoh, Gelus, Midora, Zellogi and Deridovely owe nothing to Japanese or English, and the long ones (Armonia Justin Beyondormason, Kinddara Guivelostain) read like a joke the Shinigami King is in on. The list opens with canon, then gives originals in each register.
Tips for choosing a name
- For a human OC, keep the full name believable: a common Japanese surname plus a given name that fits the character's age, written given-name first as in the English manga (Kenji Arakawa, Rina Kashiwagi). Save the unusual kanji readings for the one character who matters, the way Light's name is read Raito.
- For a Wammy's House successor, pick a one-word alias that is not a common English first name (Near, Mello, Matt) and pair it with a plain but slightly dated Western real name, written in full only when the reveal matters.
- Shinigami names should sound nothing like the human names: one to three syllables, hard consonants, odd double letters or a stray h (Sidoh, Gook, Calikarcha). Give a powerful or ancient one a long, absurd name and everyone else something blunt.
- Aliases matter in this series. Give an investigator or a Kira a second name they use on camera or online (Ryuzaki, Lind L. Tailor, Second Kira) and decide early which characters know the real one, since that is where the plot usually turns.
- If you are writing fan fiction set during the Yotsuba arc, the SPK hunt or the Wammy's House backstory, borrow the naming rules of that faction: Japanese executives, mixed American and European SPK agents, and English orphans with single-word codenames.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main character names in Death Note?
The core cast is Light Yagami (Kira), L Lawliet, Misa Amane, the Shinigami Ryuk and Rem, L's successors Near (Nate River) and Mello (Mihael Keehl), Watari (Quillsh Wammy), Light's father Soichiro Yagami, task force members Touta Matsuda, Shuichi Aizawa, Kanzo Mogi, Hideki Ide and Hirokazu Ukita, and later Teru Mikami, Kiyomi Takada, Naomi Misora and Kyosuke Higuchi. All of them open the list above for reference.
How do I make a Shinigami name that fits Death Note?
Keep it short and harsh, with no obvious meaning in any language: Ryuk, Rem, Sidoh, Gelus, Midora, Zellogi, Nu, Gook and Deridovely are the models. Doubled consonants, a final -k, -h or -th, and unusual letter pairs all help (Vaskuro, Thrax, Hattamuk, Zaqqut). Reserve long, overblown names like Armonia Justin Beyondormason for an elder or a Shinigami with unusual status.
What is the naming convention for Wammy's House detectives?
Each successor uses a single-word alias, usually a letter, a nickname or an odd English word (L, A, B, Near, Mello, Matt, Linda), while their real names are Western and rarely spoken aloud: L Lawliet, Nate River, Mihael Keehl, Mail Jeevas. For an original successor, choose an alias that is a real but uncommon word and pair it with a full real name that sounds like it belongs on an English birth certificate, as in the Quill (Anselm Crane) and Sable (Theodora Voss) entries.
Can I use these names for a Death Note OC, role-play or fan fiction?
Yes. The original Japanese names suit Kira suspects, NPA officers, students and Yotsuba staff; the Western names suit FBI, SPK and Wammy's House characters; and the Shinigami names suit a new notebook owner's companion. Pair a human name with an alias if the character hides their identity, since that is how most Death Note plots are built.
