Coati Name Generator
Ring-tailed, long-nosed names for coatis and coatimundis
Names for a zoo, sanctuary, plush or storybook coati: the animal's own names like Pizote and Tejón, tail names like Tailspin and Ringo, fruits like Guayaba, and sets such as Mango & Tango for a litter.
About coati names
A coati, also called a coatimundi, is a relative of the raccoon with a long bendy nose and a ringed tail that it often carries straight up like a flag. Coatis live from Arizona and New Mexico down to northern Argentina, and the animal has a different name almost everywhere it goes: pizote in Costa Rica, tejón in Mexico, cusumbo in Colombia and Ecuador, quati in Brazil. The word coati itself comes from Tupi. Those names are on the list, along with plays such as Coco Mundi and Rain Coati.
The rest follows the animal. Tail names like Tailspin, Ringo and Question Mark come from that upright tail, and Leaf Flipper and Grub Scout from a day spent digging through leaf litter. There are Latin American given names and nicknames, fruits and foods of its range such as Guayaba and Cacao, and places from cloud forest to desert canyon. Females and young travel in bands while adult males mostly live alone, so you will find troop names like Las Comadres and solo names like Gato Solo, plus pairs and trios for a litter.
These are names for zoo and sanctuary animals, story characters and plush toys. Coatis are wild animals, and keeping one is restricted in many places.
How to choose coati names
- Watch the animal first. A tail carried upright suits Flagpole or Antenna, a busy digger suits Digby or Leaf Flipper, and a rusty coat suits Canela, Russet or Paprika.
- For a litter, use one of the sets. Mango & Tango or Sol & Luna work for two, and trios such as Fig, Fern & Frond keep siblings easy to tell apart on a sign.
- Pizote, Tejón, Cusumbo and Quati are real words for the animal itself in Spanish and Portuguese. One of them is a good choice when you want the name to say where your coati's wild relatives live.
- A band of females and young can share a group name such as Las Comadres or The Tails-Up Club, with a short name for each member. A lone male suits Solo, Bachelor or Gato Solo.
- Say the name out loud. Keepers and children will call it many times, so two syllables like Mundi, Pepe or Ringo carry better than a long title, which can stay as the formal name on the sign.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a coati?
Good coati names pick up something the animal does or shows. Tailspin, Ringo and Flagpole come from the ringed tail, Captain Snuffles and Leaf Flipper from the nose, and Canela and Russet from the reddish coat. Pizote and Tejón are simply what the animal is called in Costa Rica and Mexico.
Is a coati the same as a coatimundi?
Yes, both words are used for the same animals. Coati is the shorter and more common form, and the list plays on both with names such as Mundi, Coco Mundi and Coati McCoatface.
Are there names for a group of coatis?
Yes. Female coatis and their young live in groups called bands, so the list has band names like Las Comadres, The Leaf Litter Crew and The Grub Club. For a zoo litter there are pairs and trios, for example Cacao & Canela and Sol, Luna & Estrella.
Can I use these names for a pet coati?
The names are meant for zoo and sanctuary animals, characters in stories and games, and plush toys. Coatis are wild animals, and keeping one is restricted or banned in many places, so this page does not recommend one as a pet.
