Names for climbing routes and boulder problems in the first-ascent tradition, from serious lines like Point of No Retreat and lyrical ones like Alpenglow Arête to puns like Crimp and Punishment and gym sets like Pink Tape Panic.

About climbing route names

By long custom, the person who makes the first ascent of a climb gets to name it, and the name then travels through guidebooks. That freedom is why route names read so differently from trail or peak names. Some are lyrical, like Moonlight Buttress in Zion or Midnight Lightning in Yosemite's Camp 4. Some are a mood, like Separate Reality. Many are a pun, a song title or a joke that only the people at the crag that day understand.

This list follows those habits across nine styles: serious names for committing lines (Point of No Retreat, Ghost Anchor), lyrical ones (Alpenglow Arête, River of Stars), climbing wordplay (Crimp and Punishment, Anchor Management), nods to songs, films and books (Raiders of the Lost Arête), first-ascent stories (The Marmot Ate My Sandwich), short punchy boulder problems (Hug the Fridge, Erratic Behavior), gym sets (Pink Tape Panic), plain feature names (The Great Flake, Lightning Crack) and a small set of famous real routes included as style examples.

Apart from that small set, the names were written for this page, not taken from a guidebook. With so many climbs already named, any of them may be on a wall somewhere, so look through your local guidebook or route database before you settle on one.

How to choose climbing route names

  • Name the line after you climb it. The tradition gives the name to whoever makes the first ascent, and the names that last usually come out of something that happened on the day.
  • Match the tone to the climb. A long, committing trad line carries The Quiet Hour or Dead Reckoning better than a pun, while a four-move boulder problem can happily be Hug the Fridge.
  • Keep it easy to say and spell. A name gets shouted across a crag and typed into route apps, so two or three words usually beat a full sentence.
  • Look at the neighbors. Many walls run a theme from route to route, so read the names on either side and search your area's guidebook or online database before you publish yours.
  • Gym setters can lean on what members already see: a tape color, a volume, the corner by the door. The Yellow One in the Corner and Blame the Setter work because people were calling the climb that anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Who gets to name a climbing route?

By convention the first ascensionist, the person or team that first climbs the line, chooses the name, and guidebook authors usually record it as given. In a gym the route setter decides, and many gyms do not name their sets at all.

What are some good climbing route names?

For a serious line try Point of No Retreat, Borrowed Time or The Hourglass. For a lighter one, Crimp and Punishment, Flake News and The Guidebook Lied are all in the list, along with lyrical names such as Halfmoon Serenade and First Light on Granite.

Are the names in this list real routes?

Thirty are famous real routes, such as Separate Reality, Astroman and The Nose, included to show the style. The rest were written for this page, but climbers have named an enormous number of lines, so some will match a climb that exists. Look the name up in your local guidebook or route database before using it.

Do the names come with a grade?

No. A name says nothing about how hard a climb is, and nothing in this list is tied to a grade or rating. Grade your line separately, the way your area does it.
