Generate Chinese mountain names in pinyin with characters and a literal gloss, or in English: peaks like Cuiping Feng (翠屏峰, emerald screen peak), ridges like Fenshui Ling, cultivation peaks like Pill Furnace Peak and ranges like Canglong Shanmai. Real mountains such as Taishan and Emei Shan are labeled as real.

About Chinese mountain names

A Chinese mountain name is usually a short describing element followed by a word for the landform. Shan (山) is the general word for a mountain or hill, feng (峰) names a single peak, ling (岭) a ridge, often one that a road crosses, and xueshan (雪山) a snow mountain. Because that word is part of the name, Huangshan already means Yellow Mountain, so write Huangshan or Mount Huang, never Mount Huangshan.

The 1,000 names here come in two forms. Most are standard pinyin without tone marks, followed by simplified characters and a literal gloss, such as Cuiping Feng (翠屏峰, emerald screen peak). The rest are English renderings such as Mountain of Listening Pines. Thirty-nine real mountains, including the Five Great Mountains and the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, are labeled real. A few of those carry Tibetan, Uyghur or Mongolian names, which belong to other naming traditions.

Everything else is built from real vocabulary in Chinese word order: colors and minerals, animals, weather, numbers, objects a peak resembles, immortals and bodhisattvas, cultivation-world peaks, haunted mountains, whole ranges in shanmai, and plain village hills named for a family. These patterns are so common that a name such as Wohu Shan may well belong to a real hill somewhere in China.

How to choose Chinese mountain names

  • Match the ending to the landform. Shan fits a whole mountain or a modest hill, feng a single summit on a larger massif, ling a ridge or a crossing, and xueshan a peak that keeps its snow, as in Yinguan Xueshan.
  • Do not say mountain twice. Shan already means mountain, so write Chixia Shan or Red Glow Mountain, not Chixia Shan Mountain or Mount Chixia Shan.
  • Build a massif the way real ones are named: one mountain in shan, then its peaks in feng and its cliffs and ridges around them. A cultivation story could set Danding Feng, Xijian Feng and Wudao Ya on Lingmai Shan.
  • Copy the characters along with the pinyin. Many different characters share one spelling, which is why the list holds two real mountains written Hengshan, and for anything that matters confirm the characters with a dictionary or a Chinese speaker.
  • Search a name before you publish it. Plain names such as Wohu Shan or Bailu Shan follow patterns used all over China, and the glosses are literal readings of the characters, not local histories.

Frequently asked questions

What do shan, feng and ling mean in Chinese mountain names?

Shan (山) means mountain or hill and is the commonest ending, as in Taishan. Feng (峰) is a peak, usually one summit of a larger mountain, as in Tiandu Feng on Huangshan. Ling (岭) is a ridge or a range, as in Fenshui Ling, the watershed ridge. The list also uses ding (顶) for a summit, yan (岩) for a crag, ya (崖) for a cliff and shanmai (山脉) for a whole range.

Are these real Chinese mountains?

Thirty-nine are, and each says so in its gloss, among them Taishan, Huashan, Wutai Shan, Emei Shan, Huangshan and Kunlun Shan. The others, such as Bailu Shan, Zhaixing Feng and Jiangjun Ling, are made up on real naming patterns. Those patterns are common, so some of them will match a real hill somewhere in China.

Why does the list have two mountains called Hengshan?

Both are real. The southern Great Mountain in Hunan is written 衡山 and the northern one in Shanxi is written 恒山, and the two characters share the same pinyin spelling. Only the characters tell them apart, which is one reason every pinyin name here comes with its characters.

Can I use these names for a wuxia or xianxia setting?

Yes. Names such as Dujie Feng (tribulation-crossing peak), Sword Polishing Peak and Fengmo Feng (demon-sealing peak) were written with cultivation stories in mind, and the plainer ones suit maps, games and historical fiction. The list names mountains, peaks and ranges only, so the sect or temple that stands on one is yours to name.
