About Chilean last names

Chilean surnames start from a Spanish base with a ranking of its own. González, Muñoz, Rojas, Díaz, Pérez and Soto lead, and names that are modest in Spain are everyday in Chile: Sepúlveda, Valenzuela, Araya, Tapia, Riquelme, Aravena and Sanhueza. Basque merchants who arrived in the eighteenth century left a second layer that still sounds like old Santiago, with Errázuriz, Larraín, Eyzaguirre, Undurraga and Echeverría.

The list also carries surnames from the peoples who were there first. Mapuche family names such as Catrileo, Huenchumilla, Painemal and Nahuelpán are most at home in the south, Aymara and Quechua names such as Mamani belong to the far north, and Pakarati is a surname of Rapa Nui.

Immigration added the rest. German settlers reached Valdivia, Osorno and Lake Llanquihue from the middle of the nineteenth century (Anwandter, Kunstmann, Schmidt). Croatians went to Punta Arenas and Antofagasta, and their names are written the Chilean way, without the Croatian accent marks (Boric, Tomic). Palestinian families brought Yarur, Jadue and Hasbún, and Italian, British and French arrivals added Solari, Edwards and Subercaseaux. Chileans use two surnames, the father's and then the mother's, and every entry here is a single surname you can pair as you like.

How to choose Chilean last names

  • Keep the accents and the ñ. Muñoz, Yáñez, Sepúlveda and Errázuriz are written with their marks in Chile, and dropping them changes how the name is read.
  • For a full Chilean name, pick two entries: the first stands for the father's family and the second for the mother's, as in Rojas Sepúlveda or Carrasco Schmidt. In daily life most people go by the first one.
  • Let the surname suggest a region. Barría, Cárcamo, Mansilla and Oyarzo fit Chiloé and the far south, German names fit Valdivia and Osorno, Croatian names fit Punta Arenas and Antofagasta, and Mapuche names fit La Araucanía.
  • Mix the layers across a cast. A believable Chilean class list or soccer team puts a González and a Poblete beside a Henríquez, a Müller, a Massú and a Catrileo.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in Chile?

Spanish surnames lead by a wide margin: González, Muñoz, Rojas, Díaz, Pérez, Soto, Contreras, Silva and Martínez are near the top of any Chilean list. We do not print exact figures, because published counts change with the source and the year.

Which surnames are typically Chilean?

Sepúlveda, Valenzuela, Araya, Tapia, Riquelme, Aravena, Sanhueza, Poblete and Yáñez are Spanish in origin but far more frequent in Chile than in most other countries. Basque names such as Errázuriz, Larraín, Eyzaguirre and Urrutia are also strongly linked with the country. All of them are in this list.

Does the list include Mapuche surnames?

Yes. It includes Mapuche family names such as Catrileo, Huenchumilla, Painemal, Millabur, Ñanculef, Quintremán and Lienlaf, along with a few Aymara, Quechua and Rapa Nui surnames such as Mamani, Quispe, Tuki and Rapu. They are written the way Chileans spell them, with the accents and the ñ.

Do Chileans use two last names?

Yes. A Chilean's legal name has two surnames, by tradition the father's first surname followed by the mother's first surname, and neither changes at marriage. This page gives single surnames so that you can build the pair yourself.
