Cemetery Name Generator

Real cemetery names follow a handful of patterns, and knowing them is the fastest way to make a fictional one feel authentic. The oldest burial grounds are simply named for the church they surround (St. Cuthbert's Churchyard, Old North Churchyard) or for the parish and a blunt noun: burial ground, graveyard, kirkyard. The nineteenth-century rural-cemetery movement replaced those with landscape names built from a natural feature and a gentle noun, which is why so many cemeteries are called something like Mount Hope, Greenwood or Oak Lawn. Twentieth-century commercial grounds softened the language further into memorial park and memorial gardens, often with a consoling word such as Rest, Peace or Eternal attached.

For fiction you can steer the mood with that vocabulary. Churchyard, kirkyard and burial ground sound old and rural; memorial park sounds modern and suburban; necropolis, ossuary and catacombs sound ancient or fantastical. A name like Candlewick Cemetery or Willowmere Memorial Park is a place the living visit with flowers, while Gallows Hill Burial Ground, Bonehollow or Pauper's Field tells players there is a reason nobody goes there after dark.

The list below mixes all of these registers, plus biblical memorial-park names, occupational grounds like Sailors' Rest and Miners' Hill, and fantasy necropolises for tabletop maps.
