Surnames found across the Caribbean, one family name per entry: Bajan names like Alleyne and Brathwaite, Bahamian Rolle and Symonette, French Creole Chastanet and Mondesir, Indo-Caribbean Persaud and Ramkissoon, and Dutch Caribbean Croes and Martina.

About Caribbean last names

Caribbean surnames come in layers, and each layer marks a chapter of the region's history. The oldest are colonial: English and Scottish names in Barbados, the Bahamas and the Leeward Islands (Alleyne, Brathwaite, Rolle, Liburd), French names in St Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe (Chastanet, Mondesir, Césaire), Dutch-era names in Aruba, Curaçao and Suriname (Croes, Martina, Wijdenbosch) and Spanish names on the large islands. Most families of African descent carry names from this layer, because enslaved people were recorded under names their owners chose or were given a surname at emancipation. In Suriname some of those were newly made Dutch words, such as Nooitmeer and Braafheid.

From 1838 indentured workers from India came to Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica and Suriname, and their given names became family names in colonial registers: Persaud, Ramkissoon, Maharaj, Jagdeo, and in Dutch spelling Raghoebarsing. Smaller groups followed, among them Madeiran Portuguese (Gonsalves, Jardim), Chinese (Lyn, Yhap), Sephardic families from Curaçao and Jamaica (Capriles, Henriques) and traders from Syria and Lebanon (Issa, Astaphan).

The list leans toward the smaller islands and toward Guyana, Suriname and Belize, because Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Barbados and the Dominican Republic have surname lists of their own on this site. Every entry is a single family name. A surname shows where a name was recorded, not anyone's ancestry.

How to choose Caribbean last names

  • Match the name to the island. Brathwaite, Greenidge and Cumberbatch read as Barbados, Rolle and Symonette as the Bahamas, Ebanks and Bodden as the Cayman Islands, Croes and Oduber as Aruba.
  • For St Lucia and Dominica, use a French Creole family name such as Mondesir, Fontenelle or Bellot with an English first name. English is the official language there, but many family names are French.
  • Keep spellings local. Guyana writes Persaud and Rampersaud, and Suriname's Dutch spelling turns the same Indian sounds into names like Raghoebarsing and Oemrawsingh.
  • Give a family more than one layer. A household with a Portuguese name like Jardim on one side and an Indian name like Sukhdeo on the other is ordinary in Guyana.
  • Do not treat a surname as a label for race or faith. Caribbean families are mixed, and a name like Gonsalves or Singh says little about the person who carries it today.

Frequently asked questions

Which last names are typical of the Caribbean?

It depends on the island. Alleyne, Brathwaite and Greenidge are closely tied to Barbados, Rolle, Knowles and Pinder to the Bahamas, Persaud and Jagdeo to Guyana, Croes and Tromp to Aruba, and Chastanet and Mondesir to St Lucia. This list mixes all of them so a reroll moves from island to island.

Why do so many Caribbean families have British, French or Dutch surnames?

The islands were colonies, and enslaved Africans were recorded under names chosen by owners, often the owner's own. At emancipation many families kept those names and others were given or chose new ones. The surname therefore follows the colonial power of the island, which is why Barbados is full of English names and Martinique of French ones.

Where do the Indian surnames in the Caribbean come from?

They came with indentured workers from India who were brought to Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname and Jamaica from 1838 into the early 1900s. Clerks wrote down a worker's given name by ear, and it later became the family name, which explains spellings such as Persaud, Ramkissoon, Kallicharran and Chanderpaul.

Does the list include Jamaican, Haitian and Cuban surnames?

Only a few, such as Beckford, Nembhard, Dessalines and Sotolongo. Those islands have last-name lists of their own on this site, so this page gives its space to the Bahamas, the smaller islands, the French and Dutch Caribbean, Guyana, Suriname and Belize, with Barbados represented by its best-known names.
