Generate Carcharodon names for the shark-themed Warhammer 40,000 Chapter: void-worn personal names like Tekharo and Tovan Kharr, epithets like Kharos the Grey Tide and the Hollow Maw, and ranked names such as Reaper Prime Khomari and Strike Leader Ruvak.

About Carcharodon names

The Carcharodons, also called the Carcharodon Astra, are the Space Marine Chapter that hunts in the dark beyond the galaxy's edge, and their names sound like no other Chapter's. Forge World's Badab War books gave them Tyberos the Red Wake; the Black Library novels Red Tithe and Outer Dark added Bail Sharr, Te Kahurangi, Khauri, Akia, Kahu, Korro and Nuritona. The pattern is short, vowel-heavy personal names with a Polynesian flavor, roughened by hard k, kh and rr sounds, sometimes with a clipped second name.

Everything else here is invented in that style for your own battle-brothers. These are not real Maori or Polynesian names and are not meant to pass as such. The list mixes single names such as Tekharo and Nukhari, two-part names such as Tovan Kharr, a few Te names after Te Kahurangi, and gothic names in the mold of Tyberos, such as Thalaros and Kyberon.

Epithets do the rest. Tyberos is the Red Wake and Te Kahurangi the Pale Nomad, so the list offers void and predator bynames in the same register, attached (Kharos the Grey Tide) or standing alone (the Hollow Maw, Coldwake). Ranked entries use the Chapter's own terms where the lore supplies them: Reaper Prime, Company Master, Strike Leader and the Red Brethren, the Terminator elite of Tyberos.

How to choose Carcharodon names

  • Keep the personal name short and open, two or three syllables with plenty of vowels, then roughen it once: a kh, a doubled r or a hard final consonant, as in Nukhari, Takorro or Rukhain.
  • Give epithets to few. Tyberos and Te Kahurangi are legends of the Chapter; a line battle-brother is better served by a bare name such as Kaoren or Hald Turakh.
  • Use the Chapter's own ranks to anchor a roster: Company Master, or Reaper Prime as Bail Sharr is styled, for a company's commander, Strike Leader for a squad leader, and Red Brethren for the Terminator elite.
  • Do not borrow real Maori or Polynesian personal names, titles or sacred terms for a tabletop army. The invented names here aim for the sound of the Chapter's published names; if one turns out to match a real word or name, change it.
  • Pick epithets from the void and the hunt, not from the animal. The Silent Wake and the Pale Nomad suit a grim, silent Chapter; jokes about fins and jaws do not.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in the list are canon Carcharodons?

Tyberos the Red Wake, Bail Sharr, Te Kahurangi, Khauri, Kahu, Akia, Korro and Nuritona, along with the epithet the Pale Nomad, come from Forge World and Black Library sources. Everything else is original and written in the same style, so do not treat it as canon.

Are these real Maori or Polynesian names?

No. The Chapter's published names have a Polynesian flavor, and this list imitates that sound with invented names such as Vakhorr, Nairoth and Tharriaz. They are fiction for a science-fantasy setting and say nothing about real naming traditions.

What ranks do the Carcharodons use?

In the novels Bail Sharr leads his company as Company Master and Reaper Prime, squad leaders are Strike Leaders, and the Red Brethren are the Terminator elite who fight beside Tyberos. Chaplains, Librarians, Apothecaries and Techmarines keep their usual Space Marine titles, which is how they appear here, as in Chaplain Nekhor or Librarian Khaeron.

Can I use these names for my own army or a successor Chapter?

Yes. Original names are free to use for models, Kill Team rosters and fan fiction. Canon characters such as Tyberos belong to Games Workshop, so keep those to hobby and fan projects.
