Space Wolves names in Warhammer 40,000 come straight from Fenris, the chapter's death world, and Fenris is Old Norse in everything but name. A Space Wolf keeps the given name he was born with as a tribesman: Ragnar, Logan, Bjorn, Njal, Arjac, Harald, Krom, Egil, Sven, Erik. These are real Scandinavian names, so any Viking-age name works: Sigurd, Halfdan, Torvald, Ketil, Hrolf, Vidar. Only a few characters, such as Lukas and Canis, break the pattern, and even those sound at home in a mead hall.

The second half of the name is not a family name. It is a deed name or epithet earned in battle and bestowed by the pack or the skalds. Blackmane, Stormcaller, Rockfist, Deathwolf and Krakendoom describe a feat, a physical trait or a weapon. Some are honorifics with a definite article, like Bjorn the Fell-Handed, Ulrik the Slayer and Lukas the Trickster. A newly ascended Blood Claw might have no deed name yet, and a Long Fang or Wolf Lord may have several. Names also carry a rank (Wolf Priest, Rune Priest, Wolf Guard, Grey Hunter) and sometimes a Great Company, such as Torin Bloodhowl of the Firehowlers.
