Brazilian nicknames the way families and friends use them: short forms like Zé (José), Chico (Francisco), Bia (Beatriz) and Malu (Maria Luíza), diminutives like Pedrinho and Aninha, and endearments like Meu bem and Mozão with a short gloss.

About this generator

In Brazil few people go by the full name on their birth certificate. An apelido takes over at home, at school and often at work, and Portuguese gives it three tools. The first is the short form: José becomes Zé or Zeca, Francisco becomes Chico, Beatriz becomes Bia, and Eduardo and Eduarda both become Duda. Double names fold into one word, so Maria Luíza is Malu and Carlos Eduardo is Cadu.

The second tool is the diminutive. The endings -inho and -inha, or -zinho and -zinha where the name needs them, add affection more than smallness: Pedrinho, Paulinho, Aninha, Joãozinho. The third is the augmentative -ão, which turns Pedro into Pedrão and Marcos into Marcão. It reads as big and friendly and is mostly given to men.

The list has 500 entries in ten groups: men's and women's short forms in near equal number, forms that both share, compound-name nicknames, the three endings, endearments such as Meu bem and Xodó, family words, and the ways friends address each other. A name in parentheses is the source of the nickname, and other words in parentheses are a plain gloss. Nicknames about skin color, weight or disability are left out.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For an entry with parentheses, use only the part in front. The name inside shows where the nickname comes from, and many short forms serve several names: Beto can be Roberto, Alberto or Gilberto.
  • Pick the ending for the relationship. The same Pedro can be Pedrinho to his grandmother and Pedrão to his teammates, and a Fernanda is Fê to friends and Fernandinha at home.
  • Match endearments to the person. Querido, lindo and fofo go to a man and querida, linda and fofa to a woman, while amor, vida, bem and xodó stay the same for anyone.
  • Use the regional words to place a character. Mainha, Painho and Voinha belong to the Northeast, and Guri, Guria and Piá to the South.
  • With older people, put Seu or Dona in front of the nickname, as in Seu Zé or Dona Cida. It keeps the warmth and adds respect.

Frequently asked questions

What does apelido mean?

Apelido is the Brazilian Portuguese word for a nickname. In Portugal the same word means surname, which often confuses learners. In Brazil it covers everything from Zé (José) and Bia (Beatriz) to a pet name such as Xodó.

What do -inho and -inha mean in Brazilian nicknames?

They are the diminutive endings of Portuguese, -inho for a male name and -inha for a female one. Added to a name they show fondness, so Paulinho, Serginho, Aninha and Ritinha are simply warm ways to say Paulo, Sérgio, Ana and Rita. Some names take -zinho or -zinha instead, as in Joãozinho and Mariazinha.

What do Brazilian couples call each other?

Amor and Meu bem are the everyday choices, along with Vida, Querido and Querida. Playful forms grow out of amor: Amorzinho, Mozão, Mô and Mor are all in the list. Chuchu, Docinho and Xodó are sweet, slightly old-fashioned options.

Why do some Brazilian nicknames look nothing like the full name?

Many keep the end of the name instead of the beginning: Tião comes from Sebastião, Beto from Roberto, Quim from Joaquim and Tonho from Antônio. Others, such as Chico for Francisco and Zé for José, are old forms that every Brazilian knows without thinking. Compound names add a third route, which is how Maria Júlia becomes Maju and João Pedro becomes JP.
