BJJ Nickname Generator
Mat nicknames for grapplers, from apelidos to armbars
Generate BJJ nicknames for training partners, competitors and academy group chats, from Tatu (armadillo) and Pipoca (popcorn) to Captain Kimura, Half Guard Harry and The Human Blanket.
About this generator
Brazilian academies have a habit of renaming people. A new student picks up an apelido, usually an ordinary Portuguese word for an animal, a food or a trait, and it can stick so well that training partners forget the name on the membership form. Over a quarter of this list follows that custom, each entry with an English gloss in parentheses: Tatu (armadillo), Pipoca (popcorn), Carrapato (tick) for the partner who never lets go.
The rest is English and comes from the mat itself. Technique nicknames say what someone always hunts (Captain Kimura, Mr. Omoplata, Lapel Wizard), and many pair a first name with a move, as in Half Guard Harry and Osoto Gary. Others follow styles of play: pressure passers (The Human Blanket), guard players and the flexible (Human Pretzel, Deep Half Diver), leg lockers and former wrestlers (The Heel Hunter, Never Pulls Guard).
Gym life fills the remainder: beginner and hobbyist jokes (Shrimps the Wrong Way, Desk Job Jitsu), open-mat characters, masters-division names (Old Man Strength, Started at Forty), kids' class names (Tiny Tornado), women's names (Armbar Queen, Braids and Chokes) and competition monikers such as Clockwork and The Closer. Entries are standalone nicknames, not full names, and the list holds no academy names and no belt-rank claims.
Tips for choosing a name
- Let the nickname be earned. In most gyms it comes from something that happened on the mat, so offer two or three options in the group chat and keep the one teammates start using on their own.
- Match it to the game. The partner who lives in bottom half guard suits Deep Half Diver, the one whose pressure ends rounds early suits Concrete Blanket, and the one who attacks feet suits The Podiatrist.
- Say a Portuguese apelido aloud before it goes on a patch or a team shirt. Short words such as Tatu, Pipoca and Coruja are easy to shout across a mat, and the gloss tells you what you are calling someone.
- Use the first-name entries as templates. Kimura Kim and Ankle Pick Nick show the pattern: take a teammate's first name and pair it with a technique that rhymes with it or shares its first letter.
- Keep it kind. The beginner jokes work best on yourself or on a friend who laughs first, and no nickname should stay on someone who has asked for it to stop.
Frequently asked questions
What is an apelido in Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
Apelido is Portuguese for nickname. Nicknames are used widely in Brazilian daily life and sport, and jiu-jitsu academies kept the habit, so a student may be known on the mat by an animal, a food or a trait instead of a given name. The Portuguese entries here follow that pattern, such as Coruja (owl), Paçoca (peanut candy) and Tranquilo (easygoing).
Does the list include famous fighters' nicknames?
Not on purpose. The Portuguese words are ordinary ones that many people share, and the apelidos best known as one athlete's ring name were left out while drafting. Grappling has countless gyms and a long history, so an overlap with someone's nickname is still possible. Treat the entries as ideas, not as a record.
What do the technique nicknames refer to?
They use the standard names of positions and submissions. A kimura and an omoplata are shoulder locks, a triangle is a choke applied with the legs, and half guard is a position where the bottom player controls one of the top player's legs. That is where Captain Kimura, Mr. Omoplata, The Triangle Kid and Half Guard Harry come from. Japanese throw names appear too, as in Uchi Mata Matt.
Are there BJJ nicknames for kids and for women?
Yes. Tiny Tornado, Shrimp Champ, Captain Cartwheel and Gold Star are meant for kids' classes, and Armbar Queen, Lady Kimura, Mat Empress and Silk and Steel for women who train. The list steers away from nicknames that mock a person's weight, looks or background.
