Brazil is the only football nation where the name on the shirt is usually not the name on the passport. Pelé was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Garrincha was Manuel Francisco dos Santos, Kaká was Ricardo Izecson. The tradition comes from long Portuguese compound names and a culture that hands out apelidos early: a childhood diminutive (Ronaldinho, Juninho, Vitinho), an augmentative for the big man (Marcão, Lucão, Luizão), a physical tag (Careca, Dentinho, Baixinho), a state of origin (Baiano, Carioca, Paraíba, Pernambucano), or a pure invention like Gabigol, Pikachu or Tchê Tchê. When two players share a nickname the second one gets a qualifier, which is how you get Juninho Pernambucano and Juninho Paulista, or Dudu Alagoano alongside plain Dudu.

Modern Brazilians are increasingly shirt-named with a first name and surname in the European style (Lucas Paquetá, Thiago Silva, Bruno Guimarães), and the registered full name beneath it follows Portuguese conventions: two given names, the mother's surname, then the father's (João Pedro Salgado, Matheus Cavalcanti). Both registers appear here so a fictional squad can mix a Talisca with a Wellington Tibúrcio the way a real one does.
