Boy Middle Name Generator

A boy's middle name is heard far less often than his first name, but it decides whether the full name sounds finished. For generations the default was a short, safe classic: James, Lee, Michael, Thomas, William, Edward and Alexander are still the most common boy middle names in the US and UK, partly because they are family names and partly because they sit comfortably between almost any first name and surname. The rule of thumb is contrast. A one-syllable first name wants a longer middle (Jack Nathaniel, Max Sebastian); a three-syllable first name wants something short (Sebastian Cole, Theodore Reid).

The newer trend is the surname-style middle name: Hayes, Beckett, Sawyer, Grey, Lennox and Knox give a modern two-name rhythm and are often borrowed from a mother's maiden name or a grandparent's surname. Irish and Scottish names (Callum, Ronan, Declan, Finn), Old Testament names (Ezra, Amos, Gideon, Silas) and Latin names (Cassius, Felix, Lucian, Atlas) each bring a distinct flavor without competing with the first name.

This list mixes all of those registers. Read the whole name aloud, check the initials do not spell anything unfortunate, and make sure the middle name does not end in the sound the surname begins with, which blurs the two together when spoken.
