About comic book names

A comic book name has to do three jobs at once: fit on a cover in big type, survive being shortened to one word in conversation, and tell a browser which shelf it belongs on. Superhero books are traditionally named after the lead (a name, a rank, a colour plus a noun), team books after the group, and indie comics after a place, an object or a phrase that sounds like it is already half a story. Horror titles lean on ordinary things made wrong, sci-fi titles on procedure and distance, crime titles on money, weather and bad luck.

A monthly series wants a title that can take an issue number and a volume subtitle; a graphic novel can afford something longer and stranger; a webcomic needs a name that is easy to type and still free as a URL and a social handle.   • Match the name to the format you are actually making; a two-word punchy title suits an ongoing superhero series, while a longer phrase suits a standalone graphic novel.
  • Leave room for the logo: very long titles and titles full of thin letters (I, L, T) are hard to make bold on a cover, which is why so many classic comics are one or two words.
  • Avoid leading with a generic noun like Tales or Adventures unless the rest of the title is distinctive; the unusual word is what readers remember.
