About Bolivian last names

What sets Bolivian surnames apart is how many come from the country's own languages. Mamani and Quispe are among the most common family names in Bolivia, and on the altiplano of La Paz and Oruro they stand beside Condori, Choque, Apaza, Ticona, Colque and Yujra. Several are plain Aymara or Quechua words: Mamani is a falcon, Condori comes from the word for condor, Choque is gold and Colque is silver. Many of these began as personal names and became fixed family names under Spanish rule.

Other regions have their own stock. The valleys of Cochabamba, Sucre and Potosí are home to Spanish and Basque names closely tied to Bolivia, such as Veizaga, Ferrufino, Mariaca, Querejazu and Urquidi. Santa Cruz and Beni have Justiniano, Saucedo, Antelo and Añez, the Chiquitano names Tomichá and Charupá and the Guaraní names Iyambae and Mandepora. Tarija adds Gareca, Tejerina and Vacaflor.

A smaller share comes from immigrant communities: Croatian families such as Marinkovic and Kuljis, Arab ones such as Dabdoub and Asbún, Okinawan settlers such as Higa and Oshiro, and the Mennonite colonies with Friesen, Klassen and Wiebe. Spanish surnames found everywhere, such as Flores, Vargas and Rojas, are kept to a minority. Bolivians carry two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's, and a surname alone says nothing certain about a person's ancestry.

How to choose Bolivian last names

  • Build a full name from two entries, the father's surname first: Mamani Quispe, Justiniano Roca or Veizaga Terrazas. In daily life people often go by the first one alone.
  • Match the surname to the region. Aymara names suit La Paz, El Alto and Oruro, Veizaga or Torrico suits Cochabamba, Justiniano or Antelo suits Santa Cruz and Beni, and Gareca or Tejerina suits Tarija.
  • Keep the Bolivian spellings. Torrez, Soliz, Cortez and Gonzales are often written elsewhere as Torres, Solís, Cortés and González, and Croatian names are written without their accent marks, as in Marinkovic and Yaksic.
  • For a character from a Mennonite colony, pick a Low German family name such as Friesen, Wiebe or Neufeld, and expect many families in one colony to share the same few surnames.
  • Do not read ancestry or class off a surname. Marriage and migration have spread these names across the country, and many Bolivians pair an Aymara or Quechua surname with a Spanish one.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Bolivian last names?

Mamani and Quispe are regularly named among the most common surnames in Bolivia, along with Flores, Condori, Choque, Vargas, Rojas, Gutiérrez and Fernández. All of them are in the list.

What do Aymara and Quechua surnames mean?

Many are everyday words. Mamani is a falcon, Condori comes from the word for condor, Choque is gold, Colque is silver, Quispe is linked to a word for crystal or glass, and Nina is fire. The registry spellings follow Spanish habits, so they differ from the way Aymara and Quechua are written today.

How do Bolivian last names differ from Peruvian ones?

The Andean core is shared: Quispe, Mamani, Condori and Choque are at home on both sides of Lake Titicaca. Bolivia has a larger Aymara share, with names such as Callisaya, Siñani and Quisbert, and its lowlands add a stock of their own, among them Justiniano, Antelo, Tomichá and Iyambae.

Why do some Bolivian surnames look Croatian, German or Japanese?

They came with immigrants. Croatian and Arab families arrived around the turn of the twentieth century, Okinawan settlers founded farming colonies near Santa Cruz in the 1950s, and Mennonite colonies grew up in the same region from the 1950s on. Their surnames, such as Kuljis, Dabdoub, Shimabukuro and Penner, are Bolivian family names today.
