About Berber last names

Most Amazigh (Berber) families took a fixed surname when a civil register asked for one. In Kabylia the French register of the late nineteenth century set down names such as Mammeri, Amrouche and Hamoum, and in Morocco registration came in the twentieth century. Before that a person was known by a given name, a father's name and a clan.

The clan words survive in the surnames. Aït means the people of and opens names such as Aït Ahmed and Ait Lahcen. Kabyle papers also write Naït, of the people of, as in Naït Zerrad, and Kabyle speakers say Ath for the same word. Ou means son of, as in Ouali, Oukaci and Ouhammou, and ult or walet means daughter of. In the Sous, Id before a name, as in Id Brahim, does the work that Aït does elsewhere.

The list runs from Kabylia, the Aurès and the Mzab to the Rif, the Atlas, the Sous, southern Tunisia and the Nafusa Mountains of Libya. Tuareg tradition links a person to a father with Ag or Walet instead of an inherited surname, so those entries are labelled as patronymics. Many Amazigh families carry Arabic-derived surnames, and many names here are carried by Arabic speakers too, so a surname alone proves nothing about ancestry or language.

How to choose Berber last names

  • Match the form to the region. Aït with the two dots and Naït point to Kabylia, Ait without them is how Moroccan papers and families in Europe write it, Id suits the Sous, and names such as Afellay and Azaouagh point to the Rif.
  • Treat Aït, Naït, Ould, Si and Id as part of the surname. Aït Menguellet and Id Moussa need both words, while Ouali, Oukaci and Ouhammou are written as one.
  • Put the given name first in everyday use, as in Aksel Tighilt or Tilelli Aït Amara. Official forms in Algeria and Morocco give the family name its own field.
  • Use an entry labelled Tuareg patronymic only for a Tuareg character. Ag Mossa is a man whose father is Mossa and Walet Oumar is a woman whose father is Oumar, so siblings share it and their children do not.
  • For a real family's history, ask the family. Names such as Haddad, Meziane and Amara are shared by many households that are not related to each other.

Frequently asked questions

What do Aït, Naït and Ou mean in Berber last names?

Aït means the people of, so Aït Kaci is the family of Kaci. Naït adds the word of in front and is common on Kabyle papers, as in Naït Djoudi. Ou means son of and is written as one word with the name, as in Ouamrane, Oubaha and Oulhaj. The feminine words ult and walet mean daughter of.

Why are some entries labelled Tuareg patronymic?

Tuareg tradition names a person after the father instead of passing one surname down the generations. Ag means son of and Walet means daughter of, so Ag Attaher and Walet Halatine change with each generation. They are in the list because people look for them beside Amazigh surnames, and the label keeps the difference clear.

Why are Berber surnames spelled the French way?

Most Latin-script spellings were fixed in French-language registers in Algeria and Morocco, so they follow French sound values: ou for the u or w sound, ch for sh and dj for j. That is why the list has Ouyahia, Akhannouch and Hadjadj. The few Libyan names follow the English-style spelling more common there, as in Shammakhi and Zuwari.

Is everyone with one of these names Amazigh?

No. Arabic and Tamazight speakers have lived side by side for centuries, and names such as Zeroual, Chaoui and Soussi are carried by families of both languages. A surname with Aït, Ou or Id is Amazigh in form, but it is a hint about where a name was first written down, not proof of anyone's ancestry or identity.
