Tunisian surnames in the spellings used in Tunisia: Trabelsi, Ben Ali, Hammami and Jlassi beside Bourguiba, Fourati, Zarrouk and Memmi. Family names only, one per entry.

About Tunisian last names

Tunisian surnames are written in Latin letters the French way, so the list uses those spellings: ou for the long u, ch for sh, and an occasional dj. The most recognizable pattern is the Ben name, 'son of' plus a forebear's given name, written as two words: Ben Ali, Ben Salah, Ben Youssef, Ben Achour. Bou names such as Bouazizi, Bourguiba and Bouzid are usually written as one word.

A second large family is the nisba, a name ending in -i that points to a place or a tribe. Trabelsi means a family from Tripoli, and Sfaxi, Soussi, Kairouani, Djerbi, Gabsi, Beji and Kefi name Tunisian towns and islands. Names such as Hammami, Ayari, Jlassi, Ferchichi, Mejri, Dridi and Riahi go back to tribal groups of the interior.

The cities add their own layer. Old Tunis families include Lasram, Zarrouk, Mestiri and Belkhodja, names such as Turki, Stambouli and Landoulsi point to Ottoman or Andalusian forebears, and Sfax is known for Fourati, Kallel, Masmoudi and Chaabouni. Tunisian Jewish family names such as Memmi and Bismuth are part of the record too. A surname says nothing certain about a person's faith or origin today, so read all of this as family history, not as a fact about any bearer.

How to choose Tunisian last names

  • For an everyday Tunisian family, start with names met all over the country: Trabelsi, Ben Ali, Hammami, Jlassi, Gharbi, Dridi, Mejri.
  • Keep the Tunisian spelling. Ben is a separate word and Bou is joined on, so write Ben Salah and Bouzid, and leave ou and ch as they are in Oueslati and Chaabouni.
  • Use a place name to hint at a family's roots: Sfaxi for Sfax, Soussi for Sousse, Djerbi for the island of Djerba, Kefi or Jendoubi for the northwest.
  • A married woman in Tunisia usually keeps her own family name in official records, so a fictional couple can carry two different surnames.
  • Researching a real family? A surname is only a first clue. Go on to civil records, which say far more than a name can.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Tunisian last names?

Trabelsi is often named as the most common, and Ben Ali, Hammami, Jlassi, Dridi, Gharbi, Ayari and Mejri are met all over the country. We give no figures, because counts differ from source to source. All eight are in the list.

What do Ben and Bou mean in Tunisian surnames?

Ben means 'son of', so Ben Salah began as the son of a man called Salah and later became a fixed family name. Bou comes from the Arabic for 'father of' and often works like 'the one with', as in Bouzid or Boughanmi. In Tunisia Ben is normally written as a separate word and Bou is joined to the rest.

Why are Tunisian names spelled with ou and ch?

The Latin spellings follow French, which was the language of administration when these names were first written in Latin letters. That is why you see Oueslati and not Weslati, Chaabouni and not Shaabouni, and Djerbi with a dj. The list keeps to those spellings throughout.

Can a Tunisian surname tell me someone's origin or religion?

Not reliably. Trabelsi once pointed to Tripoli and Sfaxi to Sfax, but families move, marry and change, and the same surname can be carried by people of different backgrounds. Treat a name as a hint about family history at most.
