Real asylum names followed a surprisingly rigid formula, which is why fictional ones sound instantly recognizable. Nineteenth-century institutions were usually named for a place plus an official designation: "Danvers State Lunatic Hospital," "Colney Hatch Asylum," "Willard Asylum for the Insane." Private facilities favored a founder's surname or a country-house name with "Hall," "Retreat," or "Sanitarium" attached, and Catholic hospitals were dedicated to saints, most fittingly St. Dymphna, patron of the mentally ill.

The tone you want depends on the story you're telling. Horror writers and game designers lean on gothic, weather-worn place names (Ravensgate, Hollowmere, Blackwood) paired with the older, harsher terminology such as "Lunatic Asylum" or "Hospital for the Insane," which reads as period-accurate and unsettling at the same time. Overly cheerful names like "Pleasant Valley" or "Sunnyvale" work as a different kind of creepy: the gap between the sign on the gate and what happens inside is a classic device.

If you're naming a modern behavioral-health facility rather than a haunted ruin, drop the historic terms entirely. Contemporary institutions use "Psychiatric Hospital," "Behavioral Health Center," or "Recovery Institute" and neutral, natural imagery. This list mixes all three registers so you can pick the era and mood you need.
