Prison Name Generator

Real prisons are named in only a few ways, and copying those patterns is what makes a fictional one convincing. Most American state prisons take the name of the nearest town or landmark plus a formal suffix: San Quentin State Prison, Folsom State Prison, Sing Sing (from the village of Ossining), Attica Correctional Facility, Pelican Bay. Federal prisons use an acronym plus a location: USP Leavenworth, FCI Danbury, ADX Florence, MCC New York. British prisons are HMP plus a place (HMP Wormwood Scrubs, HMP Belmarsh), and older facilities keep the word gaol or bridewell. Nearly every prison also has an insider nickname: the Rock, the Walls, the Farm, the Tombs, the Big House.

Those nicknames come from geography and reputation, which is why the most memorable fictional prisons (Shawshank, Fox River, Oz, Litchfield, Azkaban, Arkham) sound like real places rather than adjectives. Cold, stone, water and isolation words carry the mood: Blackwater, Cold Harbor, Ironwood, Widow's Point. Sci-fi settings swap the location for a designation (Detention Block Sigma-9, Penal Asteroid Kappa-7), and fantasy settings turn the prison into a keep, tower, or oubliette.
