Astronaut Name Generator

Pick names that sound like real people from a spacefaring country and then attach a role: Commander Dana Reyes, Flight Engineer Priya Ramanathan, Cosmonaut Viktor Petrov, Mission Specialist Tobias Lindqvist. Plain, pronounceable names work better than invented sci-fi ones because they match how actual crews are listed on mission pages and patches.

Many do, especially those who came from military aviation or test-pilot school, and the names are used informally among crews and in radio chatter. They tend to be short, one or two syllables, and often poke fun at the person. Examples in this list include Halo, Ballast, Gimbal, Torque and Lodestar; pair one with a full name, such as Elena "Comet" Vasquez, for a character with flight experience.

They describe the same job in different programs. Astronaut is the NASA, ESA, JAXA and CSA term; cosmonaut is used by Russia's Roscosmos; taikonaut is the common English word for China's crews; India's Gaganyaan program uses vyomanaut and France sometimes uses spationaute. In fiction, the title tells readers where the character trained.

Decide the vehicle first, because it sets the roles. A modern capsule carries a Commander, a Pilot and two Mission Specialists or Flight Engineers; a station expedition adds a Flight Engineer from each partner agency; a lunar lander crew needs a Commander and a pilot. Then choose names of different origins and lengths so the roster is easy to tell apart in dialogue.
