An alternate reality game lives or dies on its first impression, and the name is usually the first clue a player finds: a phrase scratched into a poster, a URL in a video description, a callsign on a late-night broadcast. The best ARG names from the genre's history sound like things that already existed before anyone was looking at them. I Love Bees was a fake beekeeping blog, Year Zero was a date on a flash drive, and the Cicada 3301 puzzles took their name from an image of an insect and a prime number. Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose a name that could plausibly exist in the real world first and feel sinister second; a boring-sounding trust, hotline or cable-access channel is more unsettling than anything with 'dark' or 'cursed' in it.

Usually not on the surface. Most celebrated ARGs and unfiction series use mundane names like a local TV station, a company or a tape archive, and let the horror or mystery emerge from context. Overtly creepy names read as fiction immediately and spoil the 'this might be real' effect.
