Names of the Zoroastrian community, Parsi and Irani: full names in new pairings such as Rustom Batliwala, Shirin Dastoor and Morvarid Zartoshti, single given names and surnames, and older Avestan forms such as Vishtaspa and Pouruchista.

About Zoroastrian names

Zoroastrians today form two main communities: the Parsis of India and Pakistan, whose ancestors left Iran more than a thousand years ago and settled in Gujarat, and the Zoroastrians of Iran, with the Irani families who came to India from Yazd and Kerman much later. Both take their given names from the same stock: the Avesta, the Sasanian kings and the Shahnameh. The Parsi spellings are their own, so the list has Rustom, Jamshed, Feroze, Behram and Kaikhushru where an Iranian list has Rostam, Jamshid, Firuz, Bahram and Kaikhosrow.

Parsi surnames are younger than the given names. Many name a town, such as Bharucha (Bharuch), Surti (Surat), Billimoria (Bilimora) and Poonawalla (Pune). Others name a family trade, as Mistry, Contractor, Engineer, Daruwalla, Batliwala and Vakil do, or a priestly office, as Dastur does. A traditional full name runs own name, father's name, surname, which is why some entries have three parts, such as Mitra Jehangir Vevaina. Older forms carry the honorific endings -ji and -bai, as in Pestonji Billimoria and Manekbai Batliwala.

A smaller group of entries has the Iranian spellings and surnames of Irani families, such as Morvarid Zartoshti, and a few names stand in their oldest Avestan and Middle Persian forms: Vishtaspa, Pouruchista, Narseh, Adurbad.

How to choose Zoroastrian names

  • Keep the spelling in one tradition. Rustom and Jamshed go with Parsi surnames such as Batliwala or Elavia, while the Iranian spellings go with Irani surnames, as in Jahangir Yazdani and Dowlat Kermani.
  • Use the three-part form for documents and formal scenes. The middle name is the father's given name, and by custom a married woman takes her husband's given name in its place.
  • Names in -ji and -bai suit a story set in 19th-century Bombay or Surat. For a present-day character use a plain form such as Pesi, Rustom or Mani.
  • Treat a trade surname as an ordinary family name. Engineer, Doctor, Driver and Captain record what an ancestor did, and the person who carries one today may do something else entirely.
  • Keep the Avestan and Middle Persian forms for ancient settings. Vishtaspa or Yazdegerd would be out of place on a modern character, who would be Vistasp or Yezdi instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Parsi and Irani names?

The given names come from the same Zoroastrian and Persian tradition, but the spellings differ: a Parsi is Rustom, Feroze or Khorshed where an Iranian Zoroastrian is Rostam, Firuz or Khorshid. Parsi surnames grew up in India, as in Rustom Batliwala, while Irani families carry Iranian ones such as Yazdani and Kermani, or simply Irani.

Where do Parsi surnames come from?

Many are built with the ending -wala or -walla on a place or a trade, such as Poonawalla and Batliwala, or use a place name alone, such as Bharucha and Surti. Others record a trade or an office directly, such as Mistry, Vakil and Dastur. The list also has old family names of other kinds, such as Petit, Cama and Kanga.

What are the oldest names in the list?

Vishtaspa, Jamaspa and Pouruchista are names from the Avesta, the Zoroastrian scripture. Narseh, Kavad, Peroz and Yazdegerd are names of Sasanian kings. They appear as single entries, apart from the modern Parsi and Irani names.

Are these the names of real people?

No. Each full name pairs given names and surnames in a new combination. The community is small and many of its families are well known, so a pairing can match a real person by chance. Treat every full name as an invention.
