Anarchist Name Generator

Anarchist groups have a recognisable naming habit. Historically they named themselves after a place plus a plain organisational word (a Federation, a Union, a Free Territory), after a function (a Free School, a Reading Circle, an Infoshop, a Press), or after a joke at authority's expense: the Wobblies, the Sans-culottes, the Levellers and the Diggers were all nicknames worn proudly. Modern names keep that register and add the movement's symbols: the black cat (Sabo-Tabby), the black flag, the circle-A, the wildcat, the wrench, bread and roses, and slogans like No Gods No Masters or Property Is Theft.

The same humour shows up in the small organisations that do most of the real work: mutual aid kitchens, bike workshops, tenant assemblies, squats, distros and radio stations, which take homely or ironic names (Stone Soup Solidarity, No Bosses Bike Repair, The Ungrateful Tenants) rather than grand ones. Pamphleteers and militia members used noms de guerre built from a title and a plant, bird or trade: Comrade Nettle, Citizen Flint, The Lamplighter, Sabot Sam.

The list mixes collectives, affinity groups, federations, communes and squats with invented place names, function-based names for kitchens, clinics, schools and presses, a few off-world factions for science fiction, and a run of pseudonyms for characters in novels, zines and tabletop campaigns.
