Generate union names for workers' organizations of every kind: trade unions, locals and lodges, guilds, brotherhoods and sisterhoods, tenant and student unions, plus historical, steampunk and sci-fi unions for fiction and games. Realistic structures, fictional names.

About union names

Real union names follow a formula that has barely changed since the 1880s: who the members are, what kind of body it is, and sometimes where it operates. The membership part is a trade or workplace (Ironworkers, Nurses, Warehouse Workers, Graduate Researchers). The body part is one of a small set of words that each carry a flavor. Union and Federation sound modern and institutional; Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Lodge and Benevolent Society sound nineteenth-century; Guild, Company and Fellowship sound pre-industrial; United and Alliance sound like a fresh organizing drive. Older unions stacked Amalgamated, Allied or International in front, which is why the grand old names run so long.

Below the national name sits the local: Ironworkers Local 9, Nurses' Local 77, Lodge 14, District Council 8. A local number instantly gives a fictional union a hall, a treasurer and a history. Slogans work too. Bread and Roses, An Injury to One and Solidarity Forever are all real labor phrases that make strong names for committees and caucuses.

This list keeps all of those patterns and stays fictional, so nothing here is an existing union. You will find modern service, tech and gig-economy unions, heavy-industry brotherhoods, craft guilds for a medieval or steampunk setting, orbital and asteroid miners' unions for science fiction, tenant and student unions, regional labor councils and slogan-based committees.

How to choose union names

  • Pick the body word to match the era: Brotherhood or Benevolent Society for a 1900s setting, Guild or Company for medieval fantasy, United or Alliance for a modern organizing campaign, Collective for tech and creative workers.
  • Add a local number or a place name (Local 112, of Port Ember, of the Iron Coast) when you need the union to feel established rather than brand new.
  • Name the members precisely. Warehouse Pickers United says more than General Workers' Union, and specific trades are what make real union names memorable.
  • For a real workplace campaign, check that your chosen name is not already used by an existing union in your country before printing anything, and keep it short enough for a banner.
  • For fiction, pair a formal registered name with a nickname the members actually use: the Amalgamated Dockhands Union is just the Dockhands to everyone in the story.

Frequently asked questions

How are labor unions usually named?

Almost always as members plus body, for example United Steelworkers, Brotherhood of Teamsters, National Nurses United or Writers Guild. Many are then divided into numbered locals, lodges or branches. Famous real examples such as the Teamsters, UAW, SEIU and IWW are left out of this list on purpose so every name here is free to use.

What is the difference between a union, a guild and a brotherhood?

Legally they can be the same thing; the difference is flavor. Guild is the oldest term and suits crafts and creative professions, Brotherhood and Sisterhood come from fraternal societies of the 1800s and suit railway, building and mining trades, and Union or Federation is the neutral modern term. Many organizations keep an old word in the name for tradition.

Can I use one of these names for a real union or association?

Yes, the names here are not taken from existing unions. Before you register or publicize one, search for it alongside your country's labor board listings, since a few generic combinations may already be in use somewhere.

Are there union names for fantasy, steampunk or sci-fi settings?

Yes. The list includes craft guilds and companies for medieval worlds, clockwork and gaslight unions for steampunk, and asteroid miners', orbital dockworkers' and starship crew unions for science fiction, all built on the same real-world naming patterns.
