About ambient names

Ambient music names are quiet on purpose. Brian Eno gave the genre its name in the 1970s and described music that could be as ignorable as it is interesting, and its artists have named themselves and their records in that spirit ever since: no jokes, no slang, few people. An ambient name points at weather, stone, water, light, distance or a precise scientific term, and lets the listener fill in the rest.

This list of 500 covers both the project and its releases. For the project itself there are aliases such as Pale Meridian, Slow Glacier and Petrichor Fields, and single words from geology, Latin and science such as Tarn, Thermocline, Hypnagogia and Mare Nubium. For albums and tracks there are long poetic phrases (What the snow remembered, A slow letter to the coast), place and time stamps like field recordings (Harbor, 05:40 and Platform 3, After the Last Train), and "Music for" titles and numbered series such as Music for Tide Tables, Tape Loop No. 7 and Drone Study IV.

Each strand has its own vocabulary. Dark ambient and drone names go underground (Subterranean Hum, Cold Storage), space ambient borrows from astronomy (Heliopause, Oort Drift), and ambient techno, tape work and modern classical draw on the studio and the instrument (Submerged Pulse, Dub Horizon, Felt Piano).

How to choose ambient names

  • Choose the alias before the titles. A short, neutral project name such as Tarn, Isobar or Far Shore leaves room for longer, stranger release titles under it.
  • Let one image carry a whole release. If the album is Music for Weather Stations, track titles can be times, wind directions or readings, which makes the record feel like a single place.
  • Match the word to the sound. Warm tape loops suit soft coastal and domestic words, drone and dark ambient suit industrial and underground words like Null Field, and space ambient suits astronomy terms like Kuiper Silence.
  • Use plain punctuation as a tool. A comma and a time, as in Rooftop, Blue Hour, reads like a field recording log, while a long phrase written in sentence case reads like a line of poetry.
  • Search the streaming services and the big music databases for an alias before you release under it. Ambient has thousands of small projects, and single nature words are the first to be taken.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good ambient artist name?

A good ambient alias is calm, impersonal and easy to remember. One or two words from nature or science usually do it: Pale Meridian, Slow Glacier, Estuary and Lacuna are examples from this list. Avoid jokes and slang unless humor is part of your sound.

How do I title an ambient album or track?

Three approaches are common. You can write a long poetic phrase such as Everything the river kept, log a place and time such as Harbor, 05:40, or use a functional title such as Music for Slow Elevators or Drone Study IV. Numbered series like Nine Weathers or Part IV: Thaw help when the tracks belong together.

Are there names here for dark ambient and drone?

Yes. Part of the list is written for the heavier strands, with names like Subterranean Hum, Cold Storage, Bathysphere and Hadal Choir. They stay atmospheric instead of graphic, so they also suit game soundtracks and horror podcasts.

Why do so many ambient titles start with "Music for"?

The habit goes back to Brian Eno's Music for Airports from 1978, which framed ambient music as sound made for a place or a task. Titles on this list such as Music for Tide Tables and Music for Night Ferries follow that form with new subjects.
