Generate capital ship names for the biggest vessels in your fleet: navy-style virtues like Indomitable and Resolute, battle and admiral names, mythic titans and war gods, Latin mottos, imperial titles such as Hammer of Dawn, and a few dry Culture-style names. Built for sci-fi fleets, wargames and space-navy fiction.

About capital ship names

Capital ships are the largest warships in a navy, the battleships, carriers, dreadnoughts and flagships that smaller vessels escort, and they are named differently from frigates and corvettes. Real navies reserve their weightiest names for them: abstract virtues (Indomitable, Implacable, Warspite), famous victories (Trafalgar, Agincourt, Midway), and the great admirals and statesmen (Farragut, Halsey, Yamato's namesake province). A capital ship name should sound like it was chosen by a committee that expected the ship to serve for forty years, which is why one or two grave words usually beat a clever phrase.

Science fiction keeps those habits and adds its own. The Imperium of Warhammer 40,000 favors titles of judgment such as Retribution and Sword of Orion; Halo's UNSC mixes virtues with poetry like Pillar of Autumn; The Expanse names Martian capital ships for officers (Donnager) and Earth's for battles; Iain M. Banks' Culture lets its warships pick wry names like Only Slightly Menacing. Mythic sources are a reliable fallback: titans, war gods, legendary swords and monsters (Hyperion, Marduk, Excalibur, Leviathan) all carry the weight a flagship needs.

This generator mixes all of those registers, plus Latin mottos, constellations and bright stars, named admirals and chancellors, and imperial cities of antiquity, so you can name a single flagship or theme an entire battle line.

How to choose capital ship names

  • Give each class a theme and keep it. Battleships named for virtues, carriers for battles, dreadnoughts for titans tells readers the ship's size and role before you describe it.
  • Put the flagship's name in a line of dialogue: 'Fleet, form on Indomitable' has to sound natural. Names longer than four words belong to Culture-style humor, not a grim navy.
  • Named-person ships imply a history. Admiral Okonkwo or Chancellor Osei suggests someone worth honoring, which is a free worldbuilding hook.
  • Add a prefix only if the setting has a clear naming authority (UNSC, MCRN, ESV); a made-up prefix without a navy behind it looks like decoration.
  • For grand empires, Latin and religious phrasing (Dies Irae, Sol Invictus, Absolution) reads as old and institutional; for young republics, plain English virtues and battle names read as earnest.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a capital ship?

Historically, the battleships and later the aircraft carriers that formed the core of a fleet. In science fiction the term covers battleships, battlecruisers, carriers, dreadnoughts and flagships, anything large enough that cruisers and destroyers exist to protect it.

How are real capital ships named?

Each navy has conventions. The Royal Navy favored virtues and monarchs (Dreadnought, Warspite, King George V); the US Navy named battleships after states and carriers after battles and presidents; Japan named battleships after provinces (Yamato, Nagato). Sci-fi fleets borrow and remix these patterns.

Do these names work for games like Stellaris, EVE Online or Battlefleet Gothic?

Yes. The single-word virtues and mythic names fit almost any faction, the imperial titles and Latin suit Warhammer-style empires, and the dry multi-word names suit AI or post-scarcity factions. Most are short enough for in-game name fields.

Should I use a prefix like USS or HMS?

Only if your setting has a named navy. USS and HMS belong to real services; for an original setting invent a prefix that abbreviates your fleet's full name, the way Halo uses UNSC and The Expanse uses MCRN, and apply it consistently.
