Generate African fantasy names drawn from Yoruba, Igbo, Akan, Swahili, Zulu, Amharic, Hausa, Wolof, Mandinka and Maasai sounds: full names for low-fantasy heroes, epithet names like Nkemdi the Rain-Caller, titled rulers and priests, and invented mononyms for secondary worlds.
About african fantasy names
African-inspired fantasy, from Children of Blood and Bone and Raybearer to Black Panther, builds its names on real languages rather than the Latin and Norse roots most fantasy uses. That is what makes them sound fresh: Yoruba names are long, tonal and sentence-like (Oluwaseun, 'God has done this'), Igbo names invoke chi and heaven (Chukwuemeka, Ifeanyi), Akan names carry the day of the week (Kwame, Akosua), Zulu and Sotho names are compact and rich in clicks and nasal clusters (Nomvula, Tshepo), and Swahili names borrow Arabic through the coast (Zuberi, Rehema).
This generator mixes four registers so you can match the weight of your story. Plain full names (Adaeze Obaraze, Tendai Mhondoro) suit low fantasy and modern-adjacent settings. Epithet names (Nkemdi the Rain-Caller, Wekesa Ash-Hand) work for heroes, priests and warriors in a high-fantasy world. Titled names using real honorifics (Oba, Igwe, Inkosi, Kgosi, Mansa, Ras, Negus, Laibon, Sarkin) give you kings, queen mothers, diviners and war-chiefs. Mononyms and invented forms (Ayodhara, Tessamu, Sekwanele) fit secondary worlds where you want the sound without a direct real-world map.
Treat the names as a starting phonology. Keep vowels open, avoid consonant pile-ups that do not occur in the source language, and be consistent: a Yoruba-flavoured kingdom should not have Zulu-sounding peasants unless that contrast is the point.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick one or two source languages per culture in your world and stay inside them. Mixing Yoruba and Zulu in a single family name signals 'generic Africa' and readers from either culture will notice.
- Use the epithet names for characters who have earned a reputation in-story (the Unburnt, Thunder-Born) and plain names for everyone else, so the epithets keep their weight.
- Honorifics are not surnames. Oba, Igwe, Nana and Kgosi precede a name the way 'King' does; keep them for rulers and priests and drop them when the character is speaking to family.
- Respect meaning if you borrow a real given name. Ayotunde means 'joy has returned' and Dikeledi means 'tears'; a quick lookup keeps you from handing a cheerful name to a doomed villain by accident.
- For a secondary world, build new names from pieces of one language (Olu-, Ade-, -yemi, -tunde for Yoruba; Nom-, Thand-, -ile, -iwe for Zulu) rather than pulling whole real names, so the setting feels coherent but not copied.
Frequently asked questions
Which African languages inspired these names?
Mainly Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Edo and Efik (Nigeria), Akan and Ewe (Ghana), Wolof and Mandinka (Senegal and Mali), Swahili (East African coast), Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Tswana (southern Africa), Amharic and Tigrinya (Ethiopia and Eritrea), Somali, Kikuyu, Luo, Kalenjin, Maasai and Dinka. The epithets and invented surnames are original.
Are these names suitable for a D&D or Pathfinder character?
Yes. Use a plain full name for a cleric or fighter from a human kingdom modelled on Oyo, Mali or Great Zimbabwe, an epithet name for a barbarian or paladin with a legend behind them, and a titled name (Oba Adesanya the Seventh, Iyalode Adunni of the Market) for an NPC ruler or patron.
Can I use real African names for fictional characters?
Common given names are shared by millions of people and are fine to use, the same way Maria or Thomas would be. Be careful with names that belong to historical or living public figures, and check the meaning of a given name before assigning it, since many Yoruba, Igbo and Amharic names are full phrases.
How do I make an invented African-sounding name feel authentic?
Copy the structure of one real language. Yoruba names are often four or five syllables with open vowels and no consonant clusters; Zulu names start with prefixes like Nom-, Nko- or Si- and end in -ile, -iwe or -ani; Swahili favours two or three syllables ending in a vowel. Build from those rules and the name will sound right even if no real person has ever borne it.
