Wakanda Name Generator

Wakandan names in Marvel comics and the MCU work on two levels. The royal line and the ruling elite carry the famous apostrophe names – T'Challa, T'Chaka, N'Jobu, N'Jadaka, M'Baku, W'Kabi, S'Yan, T'Shan, N'Yami – built from a single consonant, an apostrophe, and a two- or three-syllable stem. The convention was invented by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1966, and later writers such as Christopher Priest and Ta-Nehisi Coates kept it for kings, elders, and Jabari chieftains while giving ordinary Wakandans plainer names.

Those plainer names are drawn from real African languages, and the MCU leaned hard into Xhosa in particular: the Wakandan spoken on screen is Xhosa, and characters like Nakia, Okoye, Ayo, Aneka, Zuri, and Ramonda sit alongside Xhosa, Zulu, Igbo, Yoruba, and Swahili names throughout the kingdom's tribes. Bashenga, the first Black Panther, and Azzari the Wise show how ancient names skip the apostrophe entirely.
