Generate yak names for farm and fiber herds, pack animals, pets, mascots and story characters: Himalayan names like Tenzin and Kailash, coat names like Tassel and Fringe, food names like Butter and Momo, and puns like Yakety Yak and Cognyak.

About yak names

Domestic yaks are kept across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and Mongolia for milk, fiber and meat and as pack animals, and most yak names borrow from that high country. The first group here is real given names from Tibet, the Sherpa valleys, Bhutan, Nepal and Mongolia: Tenzin, Dolma, Norbu, Pema, Tashi. Several are Sherpa day names, traditionally given for the weekday a child is born, such as Dawa for Monday and Pasang for Friday. The second group is geography: real peaks, passes and valleys, from Everest, Kailash and Makalu to Thorong La and Khumbu.

The rest follows the animal. A yak's coat hangs like a long skirt, which gives Tassel, Fringe, Mop and Shagpile. Its scientific name, Bos grunniens, means grunting ox, because yaks grunt rather than moo, hence Old Grunt and Grunt Work. Food names come from the mountain kitchen: Butter, Tsampa, Momo, Chhurpi and Po Cha, the salted butter tea. Altitude and weather supply Blizzard, Thin Air, Snowline and Spindrift, and heavy animals get Tank, Atlas and Keystone.

You will also find color names for black, golden and white-marked animals, calf names, pack-trail and bell names, pairs and small herds, storybook titles and puns on the word yak, from Yakety Yak and Kayak to Cognyak. No name is invented to sound Himalayan.

How to choose yak names

  • Borrow the Sherpa day-name custom and name a calf for the weekday it was born: Dawa, Mingma, Lhakpa, Phurba, Pasang, Pemba and Nima run from Monday to Sunday.
  • For a fiber or dairy herd, give each year's calves one theme, such as peaks, passes or mountain foods, so a name tells you the animal's age group at a glance.
  • Name for the adult. A calf called Yaklet or Pocket Yak grows into a very large animal, so decide whether the joke still works then.
  • Treat borrowed names with respect. Tenzin, Pema and Dorje are names real people carry, so skip religious titles and sacred figures as animal names, and look up what a name means before you use it.
  • Say the name the way you would call it across a pasture. Two clear syllables such as Momo, Tashi or Blizzard carry farther than a long pun, which can stay on the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a yak?

Himalayan given names and place names are the classic choice: Tenzin, Norbu, Dolma, Kailash, Makalu or Khumbu. For looks, try Tassel, Fringe or Inkwell, and for a big steer, Tank, Atlas or Rampart. Food names such as Butter, Tsampa and Momo suit almost any yak.

What is a female yak called?

In Tibetan the word yak is used for the male, and the female is called a dri; Sherpa herders say nak. In English, yak covers both sexes, and breeders usually speak of yak cows, yak bulls and calves. A dzo is a cross between a yak and domestic cattle.

What are some funny yak names?

Most of the jokes are puns on the word itself: Yakety Yak, Kayak, Cognyak, Yak of All Trades, Lumberyak and Yakamole. The list also has dry descriptive jokes such as Technically an Ox, She Who Eats the Tent and The Yak Who Would Not Budge.

Are the Tibetan and Himalayan names real?

The personal names are established given names from Tibet, the Sherpa valleys, Bhutan, Nepal and Mongolia, and the peaks, passes and valleys are real places. The list does not give meanings, so look a name up before you settle on it. Religious titles and sacred figures are left out on purpose.
