Winter Town Name Generator

Real cold-country towns are rarely named after the cold itself. Look at a map of Vermont, Alberta, or northern Norway and the names point to the trees, the animals, the trades, and the minerals that let people survive the season: Tamarack, Caribou Crossing, Sawmill Falls, Copper Falls. The strongest winter town names borrow that habit. A first word that belongs to the north (spruce, lynx, ptarmigan, ermine, kiln, lantern, woolen) attached to a plain geographic ending (Notch, Gap, Landing, Flats, Junction, Run) reads as a place that has weathered a hundred winters, while names built only from frost, ice, and snow quickly start to sound like a list.

The second half of the job is choosing a language family. Scandinavian endings (-vik, -dal, -fjell, -heim) give a fjord-and-fishing-boat feel; Alpine German (-bach, -thal, -dorf, -berg) suggests chalets and church spires; Russian and Polish forms (Morozovo, Zimowice, Studenka) suit steppe and taiga; Quebec and Newfoundland names (Baie-des-Glaces, Frozen Tickle) carry a North Atlantic bite; and Inuit and Yukon vocabulary (Nanuk Bay, Mukluk, Klondike Bend) marks true Arctic outposts.
