About weather names

Real weather gets named in a few distinct ways, and each one has its own sound. Tropical systems use rotating alphabetical lists of ordinary given names (Hurricane Ida, Typhoon Haiyan), so a fictional hurricane should sound like a person, not a monster. European forecasters name heat waves after figures from myth (Cerberus, Caronte), and the UK and Ireland name windstorms from a public vote (Storm Babet, Storm Eunice). Before official naming, storms were remembered by the day or the damage: the Children's Blizzard, the Great Gale, the Candlemas Storm, the Year Without a Summer.

Then there is the older folk layer: names for weather that never makes the news. Blackberry Winter is a cold snap in May; a sun shower is the fox's wedding in Japan and the devil beating his wife in the American South; sailors had a name for every dangerous wind from the Mistral to the Williwaw. These are the names that make a fictional world feel lived in.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the naming authority to the world. A modern setting names storms with plain first names in alphabetical order; a medieval one names them by feast day, saint, or what they destroyed.
  • Retire a name after a disaster. Real agencies remove names like Katrina and Haiyan from rotation, so a fictional storm that gets mentioned for decades should be the only one with that name.
  • Use folk names for texture, not plot. 'The Onion Snow' or 'the Fox's Wedding' in a character's mouth says more about their upbringing than a paragraph of backstory.
  • Give invented weather a physical rule. 'Glass rain' works because the reader can picture it; name the thing by what it does (drowns, bites, sings) rather than by an abstract mood.
  • For winds, borrow the real pattern: a local name, often a trade or a threat (the Fremantle Doctor, the Barber, the Widowmaker), plus the direction it comes from.

How are real hurricanes and storms named?

The World Meteorological Organization keeps six rotating lists of alphabetical first names for each ocean basin, alternating male and female. Names of especially deadly storms are retired and replaced. Winter storms in the US are named by a private weather company, while the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands name windstorms jointly from public suggestions.

Are folk weather names like Blackberry Winter real?

Yes. Blackberry Winter, Dogwood Winter, Indian Summer, the Dog Days, and Onion Snow are all traditional names for recurring weather in North America and Britain. Many local winds (Mistral, Sirocco, Chinook, Santa Ana) also have centuries-old names. This generator includes those alongside invented ones.

What makes a good fantasy weather name?

Concreteness. The best invented weather names describe a visible effect (the Red Rain, the Singing Frost) or the damage it does (the Bridge-Breaker Flood). Avoid vague adjectives and keep the grammar plain; 'The Long Dark' lands harder than 'The Eternal Shadow Tempest'.

Can I use these names for a real storm or event?
