About Sumeru names
Sumeru is Genshin Impact's nation of wisdom, and HoYoverse built it from three real naming traditions layered on top of each other. The rainforest and the Akademiya draw on Persian and Indian sources: Tighnari, Kaveh, Faruzan and Layla are Persian or Arabic names, while Nahida, Nilou, Collei and the Aranara lean toward Sanskrit and Hindi. The Darshans themselves are Avestan words (Amurta, Spantamad, Haravatat, Kshahrewar, Rtawahist, Vahumana), and the Dendro Archon's titles, Kusanali and Buer, come from Sanskrit and the Ars Goetia respectively.
The desert is a separate register. King Deshret's people use Arabic and Ancient Egyptian names, so Cyno, Candace, Dehya, Sethos and Setekh Wenut sit beside Eremite tribes like Tanit and places like Khaj-Nisut and Wadi al-Majuj. Aranara names are the easiest to spot: every one begins with Ara- followed by a Sanskrit-flavored syllable or two, as in Arama, Aranaga, Arapandu and Arakara. Almost everyone in Sumeru goes by a single given name; surnames are rare and titles (Grand Sage, General Mahamatra, Sage of Amurta) do the work a family name would.
This list mixes the canon roster and notable NPCs with original single names in each style, Aranara names, Akademiya and Eremite titles, and Sumeru places for worldbuilding.
How to choose Sumeru names
- Decide whether your OC is from the rainforest or the desert first. Rainforest and Akademiya characters suit Persian and Indian names (Rudabeh, Aravinda, Sohrab, Nandini); desert and Eremite characters suit Arabic and Egyptian names (Tariq, Nefertari, Zaynab, Khaemwaset).
- Use one given name only. Canon Sumeru characters almost never have surnames; if you need more, attach a title or place instead, as in Candace the Guardian of Aaru or Faruzan of Haravatat.
- For an Aranara, start with Ara- and add one to three soft Sanskrit-sounding syllables. Aramitra, Arapushpa and Aranandi read as native; hard consonant clusters and English words do not.
- Match names to Darshans: Kshahrewar architects and Spantamad elemental scholars sound fine with strong Persian names, while Amurta biologists and Rtawahist astrologers often get softer, nature-flavored Indian names.
- Avoid famous real people. Sumeru nods to historical scholars and the Shahnameh, but an OC called Rostam or Ibn Sina reads as a reference rather than a character; pick the lesser-known names from the same traditions instead.
Frequently asked questions
What cultures are Sumeru names based on?
Mainly Persian, Indian (Sanskrit and Hindi), Arabic and Ancient Egyptian. The rainforest and Akademiya skew Persian and Indian, the Great Red Sand skews Arabic and Egyptian, and the Aranara use invented Sanskrit-style names that all start with Ara-. A few names such as Dori and Collei are looser and harder to place.
How do I name a Sumeru OC so it sounds canon?
Pick one given name from the right region, keep it to two or three syllables, and skip a surname. Compare it with the existing cast: a scholar named Behzad or Mahtab fits beside Alhaitham and Layla, while a desert mercenary named Zaynab or Jabir fits beside Dehya and Cyno. Use a title or home village if you want a longer full name.
What are Aranara names like?
Every Aranara name begins with Ara- and ends in a short, vowel-heavy Sanskrit-flavored stem: Arama, Aranaga, Arapandu, Aranakin, Arabalika, Arachatora. The names are meant to sound gentle and childlike, so avoid harsh endings and keep the whole name under five syllables.
Can I use these names for Sumeru places or factions?
Yes. The list includes canon locations such as Port Ormos, Caravan Ribat, Vourukasha Oasis and Gandharva Ville, the six Darshans, Eremite tribes like Tanit and Shimti, and titles like Sage of Amurta, which you can adapt for your own villages, caravans, theater troupes and Akademiya scholars.
