They are unit or branch codes. TK is used for standard Imperial stormtroopers (TK-421), TD for sandtroopers (TD-4445), DT for death troopers (DT-F16) and FN for First Order stormtroopers (FN-2187). Games and fan communities also use TX for tank troopers, TB for scout troopers, TS for snowtroopers and SK for shock troopers, though those are less firmly canon.

Imperial stormtroopers were recruits with ordinary names, such as Davin Felth or Sergeant Kreel, but are addressed by operating number on duty. First Order troopers were taken as children and know only their designation, which is why Finn had to invent a name from FN-2187. Most troopers in both eras also carry a squad nickname like Nines, Zeroes or Slip.

You can use them as inspiration, but the 501st Legion and similar costuming groups assign or approve TK numbers from their own rosters, and each number is unique to one member. Generate a few options here, then check availability with your garrison before settling on one.

TK-421, FN-2187, FN-2199 (Nines), FN-2003 (Slip), FN-2000 (Zeroes), DT-F16, Captain Phasma, Sergeant Kreel, Davin Felth and TD-4445 come from the films, comics, shows and Legends material. Every other designation, callsign and name is original and free to use.
