Generate space superhero names for comics, OCs, superhero RPGs and fan fiction: one-word codenames like Magnetar and Redshift, titled heroes like Captain Quasar and General Relativity, two-word handles like Nova Lance and Comet Knight, and galactic titles like Sentinel of Sirius.

About space superhero names

Space heroes draw on the biggest vocabulary in comics, because astronomy keeps handing out dramatic words. The classic move is a single object used as a codename: Cepheid, Magnetar, Hypernova, Bolide. The obvious ones are already famous (Nova, Quasar, Starfire and Star-Lord all belong to Marvel or DC), so original heroes do better with the second shelf of the textbook: Syzygy, an alignment of three bodies; Sungrazer, a comet that skims the sun; Earthshine, the faint glow Earth casts on the dark part of the moon; Kugelblitz, a theoretical black hole made of light.

The list runs in ten styles. Titled names (Captain Quasar, Doctor Perihelion, General Relativity) read as Silver Age leads and mentors. Two-word handles such as Nova Lance, Comet Knight and Orbit Breaker suit modern team books, while alliterative ones (Rocket Raider, Meteor Maid, Ganymede Guardian) are pure Golden Age. Physics terms like Event Horizon, Escape Velocity and Tidal Lock fit tech-suit heroes, and mission language (Liftoff, Re-Entry, Max Q, Go for Launch) fits an astronaut origin.

For heroes from somewhere else there are galactic titles (Sentinel of Sirius, Last Daughter of Vega, Warden of the Kuiper Line), constellation and myth names, and words for star, moon and sky from other languages, such as Hoshi, Zvezda, Nyota, Mahina and Tengri.

How to choose space superhero names

  • Match the object to the power. A gravity controller suits Roche Limit, Tidal Lock or General Gravity; an energy blaster suits Gamma Burst, Solar Flare or Helium Flash; a speedster suits Lightspeed, Hypervelocity or Escape Velocity.
  • Decide where the hero comes from. Earth-born astronauts sound right with mission words (Payload, Heat Shield, One Small Step), while alien champions sound right with a title and a place (Emissary of Andromeda, Exile of Europa).
  • If you plan to publish, stay away from the names Marvel and DC already use. Nova, Quasar, Starfire, Star-Lord, Starman, Stargirl and Captain Comet are all established characters, which is why this list leans on less obvious terms.
  • Use the form to set the era. One word reads as a modern A-lister, a rank or title reads as Silver Age, alliteration reads as Golden Age, and Kid, Lad, Lass or Girl marks a sidekick or legacy hero (Kid Cosmos, Astro Lass, Kilonova Kid).
  • Say it over a comms channel: "Magnetar, you are clear to engage." If it is hard to say quickly, shorten it.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a space superhero?

Strong one-word picks include Magnetar, Hypernova, Redshift, Syzygy, Sungrazer and Lodestar. For a classic comic-book sound try Captain Quasar, Nova Lance, Comet Knight or Rocket Raider, and for an alien champion try Sentinel of Sirius or Last Daughter of Vega.

Are these names already used by Marvel or DC?

The list leaves out the best-known cosmic characters such as Nova, Star-Lord, Starfire and the Silver Surfer. Plain astronomy words get reused constantly in comics, though, so some entries will match a minor character somewhere. Treat the names as starting points and search any name yourself before you publish under it.

What do the science names mean?

They are real terms. Syzygy is an alignment of three celestial bodies, a standard candle is an object of known brightness used to measure distance, Max Q is the moment of greatest aerodynamic stress during a launch, and the Great Attractor is a distant region whose gravity is drawing our galaxy and its neighbors toward it. Looking one up often hands you an origin story for free.

Can I use these for a villain or a team?

Yes. Emperor Entropy, The Outer Dark, The Great Silence, Dark Matter and Event Horizon lean villainous, while The Local Group, Seven Sisters and Southern Cross work as team names.
