Find a name for a magazine about space, from one-word mastheads like Apogee and Perihelion to titles such as The Kármán Line, Redshift Review and Mars Colonial Monthly. The 1,000 ideas cover astronomy, spaceflight news, classroom projects, club newsletters and fictional publications.

About space magazine names

A space magazine title has two jobs: it sits large on a cover, and it tells the reader which corner of the subject is inside. The shortest route is a single technical word used correctly. Apogee is the point of an orbit around Earth that is farthest from Earth, Perihelion is the point of an orbit closest to the Sun, and The Kármán Line borrows the 100 kilometer altitude commonly used as the edge of space. A reader who knows the term trusts the masthead.

The 1,000 names here cover many kinds of publication. There are backyard astronomy titles (Averted Vision, Binocular Nights), spaceflight and rocketry news (Static Fire, Stage Separation), planetary science (Ceres Dispatch, The Icy Moons), astrophotography and telescope making, cosmology, kids' and classroom magazines (Rocket Kids), academic-sounding reviews (Redshift Review, The Lagrange Letter), industry trade papers, and observatory and club newsletters. Astrology is left out on purpose.

Two kinds are fiction, written for stories, games and worldbuilding: in-universe papers for colonies and stations, such as Mars Colonial Monthly and The Tharsis Tribune, and pulp-style story magazines like Far Orbit Fiction. Whichever style you pick, search for existing publications with the same title before you print it on a cover.

How to choose space magazine names

  • Check the term before you commit. Apogee and perigee belong to orbits around Earth, perihelion and aphelion to orbits around the Sun, and a misused word on the masthead costs you the readers you most want.
  • Match the name to a schedule you can keep. Monthly, Quarterly and Weekly are promises, so pick a title such as Deep Field or Launch Window if your frequency may change.
  • For an in-universe title, name the place first and the paper second, as in Dome Seven Gazette or Luna City Ledger, so the masthead does some worldbuilding for you.
  • Say the name aloud and type it as a web address. Accents and symbols, as in The Kármán Line or Orbit & Beyond, look good in print but need a plain spelling for a URL or an email sender name.
  • Leave space agencies and companies out of the title unless you really are part of one. A neutral name keeps readers from assuming an official link.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good space magazine name?

A short title that names its corner of the subject and uses its science correctly. One-word mastheads such as Apogee and Perihelion suit general titles, Static Fire or Stage Separation signal spaceflight news, and Averted Vision signals visual observing.

Can I use these names for a school project or a club newsletter?

Yes, the names are free to use for class magazines, club newsletters, blogs and podcasts. The list has classroom titles such as Rocket Kids and Room 12 Space Report and newsletter titles such as The Dome Report. If you plan to publish commercially, search for existing publications with the same title first.

Are any of these real magazines or official agency publications?

The list is written as new title ideas and is not connected to any space agency, company or publisher. Many entries are plain astronomy and spaceflight terms, so some will match a publication, a blog or a product that exists somewhere. Search before you settle on one.

Which names work for science fiction?

Two kinds of title are written as fiction. In-universe papers such as Mars Colonial Monthly, The Tharsis Tribune and Luna City Ledger suit colonies and stations in a story or game, and titles such as Far Orbit Fiction and Cold Sleep Quarterly suit a story magazine. They are invented for worldbuilding and do not describe real settlements.
