Slavic team names for sports clubs, gaming squads, quiz nights and heritage societies: club classics like Dynamo Northside and Lokomotiv Lunch Break, mascots with a translation such as Żubry (Polish: bison) and Vlci (Czech: wolves), folklore names like Perun's Thunder and Baba Yaga's Hut, and food puns like Pierogi Posse.

About Slavic team names

Slavic is a family of languages, not one nation, so this list keeps them apart. Every name written wholly in a Slavic language carries its language and meaning in parentheses: Żubry (Polish: bison), Vlci (Czech: wolves), Hrim (Ukrainian: thunder). Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian and Croatian words keep their own spelling and diacritics, and Serbian is given in its Latin alphabet. Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Bulgarian words are romanized from Cyrillic in plain English style (sh, ch, zh, kh).

About a third of the 1,000 names are these translated entries: mascots, weather words short enough for a gaming tag, trades such as chimney sweeps and mushroom pickers, and self-mocking phrases like Trzecia Połowa (Polish: the third half), the gathering after the match. Most of the rest are English names with a Slavic flavor: folklore (Perun's Thunder, Baba Yaga's Hut), rivers and mountains (Tatra Chamois, Vistula Rafters), food puns (Pierogi Posse, Borscht to Be Wild), heritage clubs, winter and hockey names, and jokes for language learners (Háček Hackers).

A last group borrows the classic club words of Central and Eastern European sport, such as Dynamo, Spartak, Lokomotiv, Torpedo, Slavia and Sokol. The second half is always a neighborhood, a workplace or a joke, never a city, so Dynamo Northside and Lokomotiv Lunch Break read as your own club.

How to choose Slavic team names

  • Say whose language it is. Slavic covers more than a dozen languages, so a Polish heritage club will want Żubry or Sokoły and a Czech one Zubři or Sokoli. The parentheses name the language of every translated entry; leave them off when you print the name.
  • Keep the diacritics on a shirt or a banner: Żubry, Čápi, Kominíci and Líšky look wrong to any speaker without their marks. The Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Bulgarian entries are romanized, so ask a speaker for the Cyrillic spelling if you want it.
  • The club words have meanings worth knowing. Górnik, Baník and Rudar mean miner (Polish, Czech, and Serbian and Croatian). Mladost and Yunost mean youth, Sloboda freedom, Jedinstvo unity, Sloga concord, Budućnost future, Zvezda star, Iskra and Jiskra spark, Stal steel, Ruch movement, Trud labor, Druzhba friendship, Mayak lighthouse, Volna wave, Fakel torch, Strela arrow, Raketa rocket, Kolos ear of grain, Pogoń chase, Arka ark and Unia union.
  • A few everyday words turn up in the English names. Babcia is Polish for grandma, smetana is sour cream, a banya is a steam bath, valenki are felt boots and sanki is a sled. The háček, the ogonek and the kreska are letter marks of Czech and Polish.
  • For a gaming tag, pick a one-word entry such as Grom (Russian: thunder), Blesk (Czech: lightning) or Burza (Polish: storm). For a laugh, make the joke about your own side: Lokomotiv Late Again, Zvezda Zero Wins, Prawie Mistrzowie (Polish: almost champions).

Frequently asked questions

What are good Slavic team names?

Mascots are the classic choice: Wilki (Polish: wolves), Sokoli (Czech: falcons), Medvjedi (Croatian: bears) and Leleky (Ukrainian: storks). For an English name with a Slavic flavor, try Perun's Thunder, Tatra Chamois, The Bogatyrs or Zvezda United. Lighter picks include Pierogi Posse and Lokomotiv Lunch Break.

Are these the names of real clubs?

Not on purpose. The list is written for your own team, and nothing in it is presented as an existing club. Words like Dynamo, Spartak, Lokomotiv and Torpedo are shared by many real clubs, each known by its city, so the entries here pair them with a neighborhood, a workplace or a joke. Mascot words such as Orły or Vlci are common, so look around your own league before you settle on one.

Which languages are the names in, and how are they spelled?

The translated entries are in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian, and each one says which. Languages written in the Latin alphabet keep their own letters, as in Niedźwiedzie and Dřevorubci, and Serbian is given in its Latin alphabet. Words from Cyrillic are romanized in plain English style, so the Ukrainian word for wolves appears as Vovky.

What do Dynamo, Spartak, Lokomotiv and Sokol mean?

Dynamo, Spartak, Lokomotiv and Torpedo began as the names of sports societies and spread to clubs in many countries; Lokomotiv teams came from the railways. Sokol means falcon and is also the name of a Czech gymnastics movement. Slavia and Slovan refer to the Slavs, Polonia is the Latin name of Poland, Tatran comes from the Tatra mountains and Radnički means workers', as in a workers' club. Zenit, Avangard, Metalurg, Tempo, Start, Olimp, Energiya and Kosmos mean what they look like.
