About slavic town names
Slavic town names are built from a shared kit of roots and endings that travels across a dozen languages. A founder's name plus a possessive suffix gives Kraków, Kharkiv, Kraljevo and Ivanovo; the -ice, -ichi and -ovtsi endings (Pardubice, Baranovichi, Kovachevtsi) mark a settlement of someone's people; and -sk, -sko, -no and -in (Smolensk, Bielsko, Brezno, Lublin) are among the oldest layers. Many names are simply a description of the ground: Zagorje is 'beyond the hills', Podgorica 'under the little hill', Zarechye 'across the river', Bila Tserkva 'white church', Zlatograd 'gold town'.
The same root surfaces with different spelling depending on where you are. A fortified town is Grad in Serbian, Hrad in Czech, Gród in Polish and Gorod or Horod further east; a new town is Novi Sad, Nowy Targ, Nové Mesto or Novgorod; a white town is Belgrade, Białogard or Belgorod. Old/new and upper/lower pairs (Stari Grad, Horní Planá, Dolní Lhota, Nizhny Novgorod) tell twin settlements apart, and a river or region tag (Hradec Králové, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ústí nad Labem, Rawa Mazowiecka) does the same job for towns that share a name.
This list mixes real towns from across the Slavic world with invented ones built on the same patterns, for maps, Slavic-flavored fantasy kingdoms and historical fiction.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide which branch you are imitating and stay in it: -ów, -ice and -owo with ł, ś and ż read Polish; -ice, -ov and háčeks (č, š, ř) read Czech or Slovak; -sk, -ovo and -grad read Russian; -ac, -ica and -vac read Serbian or Croatian; -ovo, -grad and -ets read Bulgarian.
- Build an invented name from a real root plus a native ending: dub (oak), lipa (linden), kamen (stone), voda (water), bor (pine), most (bridge), brod (ford) and gora (mountain) are understood everywhere and instantly sound authentic.
- Use a pairing word to suggest history: Stari/Stary/Staré (old) and Novi/Nowy/Nové (new), Gornji/Horní (upper) and Donji/Dolní (lower), Veliki/Wielki (great) and Mali/Mały (little).
- Add a 'nad' or 'na' phrase (on the river) or a regional adjective for a small town that needs to feel placed: Hluboká nad Vltavou, Biograd na Moru, Tomaszów Lubelski.
- Keep the diacritics in Latin-script names. Žilina, Łódź and Čačak lose their sound and their credibility as Zilina, Lodz and Cacak, and mixing Cyrillic transliteration styles (Kharkiv/Charkow) in one map looks careless.
Frequently asked questions
What are typical endings for Slavic town names?
The most common are -ov/-ów/-iv and -ovo/-owo (possessive, from a founder's name), -ice/-ichi/-ovtsi (the people of someone), -sk/-sko and -no (very old, often from a river or the land), -grad/-gorod/-hrad (fortified town), -ac/-vac/-ica (Serbian and Croatian), -ets/-ovets (Bulgarian and Russian) and -polje/-pole (field). Most towns in this list carry one of them.
Can I use these names for a fantasy setting with a Slavic feel?
Yes. Most invented entries combine a real root (dub, lipa, kamen, zlato, bor) with a real ending, so they sound like they could sit on any map from Poland to Bulgaria. Well-known real towns such as Dubrovnik or Kutná Hora are included for reference; avoid those for a fictional kingdom and favor the smaller or invented ones.
How do I tell Polish, Czech, Russian and Serbian town names apart?
Polish uses ł, ś, ż, ą and ę, and favors -ów, -ice and -owo (Tarnów, Kielce, Wejherowo). Czech and Slovak use háčeks and the -ice, -ov and 'nad' river phrases (Pardubice, Jihlava, Ústí nad Labem). Russian and Ukrainian names are transliterated from Cyrillic with -sk, -ovo, -grad and -ets (Smolensk, Ivanovo, Kamianets). Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian lean on -ac, -vac, -ica and -ik (Kragujevac, Ribnica, Šibenik).
Why do so many Slavic towns have a white, black, new or old in the name?
Color and age words were the easiest way to distinguish settlements. Beo/Bela/Biała/Bely (white) often described stone walls or chalky ground (Belgrade, Białogard, Belgorod, Bila Tserkva); Crna/Czarna/Chorny (black) marked dark soil or forest; Novi/Nowy/Nové and Stari/Stary/Staré separated a daughter town from its parent (Novi Sad, Stari Grad, Nowy Targ, Staré Město).
