Generate sidekick names for comics, cartoons, novels and games: punchy hero-sidekick codenames like Ricochet and Kid Comet, nickname-and-surname buddies like Petey "Pockets" Nguyen, robot helpers, squires and animal companions. Built for the character who carries the map, cracks the jokes and saves the day once.
About sidekick names
A sidekick name does a different job from a hero name. The hero gets the grand word, the sidekick gets the quick one: Robin to Batman, Bucky to Captain America, Short Round to Indiana Jones, Sancho to Don Quixote. Good sidekick names are short, often two syllables, and usually a little funny or a little small. Comics solved this for decades with a diminutive in front of a hero-ish word (Kid Flash, Speedy, Aqualad), and animation did it with a single bouncy sound (Scrappy, Pikachu, Donkey). Once you notice the pattern, you can build your own without copying anyone.
There are a few reliable types. The codename sidekick gets a one-word tag that sounds like a tool or a small fast thing: Ricochet, Sprocket, Pipsqueak, Zipline. The buddy sidekick has a real name with a nickname welded on, in the pulp tradition of Petey "Pockets" Nguyen or Sal "Shotgun" Esposito, and the nickname tells you their one skill. The squire, the robot and the animal each have their own register: Squire Tobin, Unit 7, Waffles the Corgi.
This list covers all of them. Pick a name that contrasts with your hero's in length and tone, because the pairing is what makes both names land.
Tips for choosing a name
- Make the sidekick's name shorter and lighter than the hero's. Stormbreaker and Sprocket works; Stormbreaker and Thunderstrike reads as two heroes arguing over billing.
- If the hero has a grand codename, give the sidekick a plain one, and vice versa. Captain Daybreak pairs with Benny "Backup" Ruiz; Danny Kowalski pairs with a partner called Ricochet.
- A nickname in quotes should name the sidekick's one useful trait: Wires, Maps, Lockpick, Radar. It tells the reader what they bring to the team before they do anything.
- Diminutives age badly. Kid Comet is fine at fourteen and awkward at thirty, so decide whether the character will grow out of the name and plan the graduation (Robin becoming Nightwing is the template).
- Animal sidekicks land best with a food or object name plus the species (Pretzel the Ferret, Turnip the Tortoise); it makes the animal feel like a character rather than a mascot.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good sidekick name?
Brevity, contrast and a hint of personality. Most memorable sidekick names are one or two syllables, sit lower in register than the hero's name, and hint at what the character does or how they behave: Scrappy fights, Sprocket fixes, Pockets carries everything.
Are these names for superheroes only?
No. The codename entries suit comics and animation, but the list also has nickname-and-surname buddies for detective stories and action films, squires and pages for fantasy, robot helpers for science fiction, and animal companions for children's books and games.
Can I use a name like Kid Comet or Pipsqueak commercially?
The names here are original or generic descriptive words, not trademarks, but comic publishers own a great many short codenames. Before publishing, search the name alongside words like comic, hero or character to make sure it is not already a registered character.
How do I name a sidekick who later becomes a hero?
Give them a diminutive or apprentice-style name early (Kid Kinetic, Squire Maddox, Junior Jetstream) and let them drop the prefix or take a new name when they come into their own. The name change itself becomes a plot beat.
