Generate names in the style of the series Severance: the show's own cast and departments, then new innie names like Agnes T., outie names like Ruth Warden, founders like Silas Harrow, and departments such as Ledger Harmonization and Tonal Compliance.

About Severance names

Severance, the television series, names people twice. On the severed floor an employee is a given name and one initial: Mark S., Helly R., Irving B. Outside, people carry a plain first name and a stiff, slightly odd surname that sounds like an old office: Scout, Bailiff, Cobel, Milchick, Graner. The founding family has severe antique names such as Kier and Ambrose, and the company names everything else in calm corporate nouns, from Macrodata Refinement to files that sound like small towns.

The list opens with 68 names from the series, as names only: people, founders, departments, places, files, the four tempers, perks and the nine core principles. It is not a complete list, and it is free of plot details.

The rest is new and follows each pattern in turn. There are innie names (Agnes T., Bram L.), outie full names (Ruth Warden, Neil Purser), managers addressed as Mr. and Ms., founders and heirs (Silas Harrow, Octavia Wyck), departments built from two or three abstract work nouns (Ledger Harmonization, Forms and Cadence), refinement files named for quiet real towns (Winona, Whitby), rooms, perks and rituals (Crumpet Social, The Tally Room) and handbook virtues (Candor, Punctuality). This is a fan page with no tie to the makers of the series.

How to choose Severance names

  • Decide which side of the elevator the character is on. A floor worker needs only a first name and an initial, such as Cora V.; the same story's outside characters need full names, such as Glenn Ostler or Tessa Quill.
  • For an outie surname, pick an old job, tool or building part that nobody uses as a name: Warden, Purser, Lintel, Mortise. It should sound faintly official and a little cold.
  • Build a department from one technical noun and one gentle one. Signal Pasteurization, Inventory and Solace and Morale Calibration work because the two halves do not quite belong together.
  • Name files after calm, ordinary places. One or two words, no explanation: Moline, Cedar Creek, Ghent. The less the name tells the worker, the better it fits.
  • Keep perks small and formal. Pancake Hour, Eraser Allotment and Desk Plant Privilege sound right because the reward is tiny and the wording is grand.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in this list are from the series?

The first 68 entries. They include floor workers such as Mark S., Helly R., Irving B. and Dylan G., outside characters, the Eagan founders, four departments, five files, the four tempers, several perks and the nine core principles. They are listed as names only, the block is not complete, and every entry after it is new.

What are the Lumon department names?

The series names Macrodata Refinement, Optics and Design, Mammalians Nurturable and Choreography and Merriment, and all four are in the list. The new department names follow the same recipe of two or three abstract work nouns, for example Microdata Reconciliation, Records Attenuation and Sums and Remainders.

How are innie and outie names different?

On the severed floor a worker is a first name and a single initial, which is why the list has entries such as Edith W. and Floyd N. Outside the building people have full names, and the list gives those separately, such as Carol Steward and Roy Ledger. No entry here pairs an innie form with an outie form.

Can I use these names for fan fiction or a tabletop game?

Yes. The new names are written for your own severed workers, managers, founding families and departments. For original work you plan to publish, stay with the new names and leave out the ones from the series.
