Generate scout patrol names short enough for a flag, a patch and a patrol yell: classic animal patrols like Wolf Patrol and Timber Wolves, outdoor names like Ridge Runners and Glowing Embers, and funny ones like Burnt Marshmallows and Knot Today.

About scout patrol names

A patrol is the small group inside a scout troop, usually six to eight scouts who camp, cook and hike together, and the oldest dens in a pack often pick a patrol name too. The patrol picks its own name, and that name then has to work in three places: stitched on a patch, painted on a flag and shouted in a patrol yell. Short names with a clear picture do all three best.

Animals are the oldest choice, and the list has them in two forms. The plain form puts the animal first, as in Wolf Patrol, Otter Patrol and Kestrel Patrol. The second form names the animal more exactly and drops the word patrol: Timber Wolves, Snowy Owls, Snapping Turtles. Beyond animals there are names from weather and terrain (Storm Chasers, Ridge Runners), from the campsite itself (Glowing Embers, Square Knots, Lantern Bearers), and from the night sky, trees, rivers, insects, dinosaurs and legendary creatures.

Older scouts often want a name that makes the rest of the troop laugh, so about a quarter of the list is food and nonsense: Burnt Marshmallows, Soggy Waffles, Radioactive Hamsters, Knot Today, Patrol McPatrolface. All of it is clean enough for the youngest patrol and for a leader to read out at a meeting.

How to choose scout patrol names

  • Test the yell first. Shout the name across a field: Wolf Patrol, Thunderbolts and Fire Ants carry, while a long joke gets lost after the second word.
  • Pick something a scout can draw. A patch or a flag needs one clear shape, so Stag Beetles, Compass Rose and Flying Pancakes are easier than an abstract word such as Valor Patrol.
  • Let the patrol vote. Put three or four names on a list, including one funny one, and let the scouts choose. A name they picked is a name they will use.
  • Find out what the other patrols in the troop are called before you settle, so two groups do not turn up as Wolf Patrol and Timber Wolves.
  • A funny name lasts when it comes from something that happened. If the patrol burned breakfast on its first campout, Burnt Toast is the right answer.

Frequently asked questions

What are good scout patrol names?

The classics are animals: Wolf Patrol, Eagle Patrol, Fox Patrol, Otter Patrol and Raven Patrol. For something less common try Ridge Runners, Lantern Bearers, Night Hikers or Iron Oaks, which still fit on a flag and are easy to shout.

What are some funny patrol names?

Food and camp mishaps are the usual source: Burnt Marshmallows, Soggy Waffles, Flying Sporks, Mosquito Bait, Leaky Tents and Not Lost Yet. Mock-heroic animals work too, such as Radioactive Hamsters, Ninja Squirrels and Thunder Chickens.

How long should a patrol name be?

One to three words is the practical limit. The name has to fit on a small patch and a flag, and the patrol will shout it as part of a yell. Every name in this list is 26 characters or shorter, and most are two words.

Are these names tied to a scouting organization?

No. They are general ideas for any group that splits into patrols, and this page is not connected to or approved by any organization. Classic animal names such as Wolf Patrol have been used by many groups for a very long time. If your own unit has rules about patrol names, follow those first.
