Scooby-Doo character names from Shaggy Rogers, Velma Dinkley and Scrappy-Doo to the Creeper and Space Kook, plus new names in the show's style, such as The Ghost of the Night Janitor, Old Man Hargrove and Snoozy-Doo.

About Scooby-Doo names

Scooby-Doo names come in a few clear kinds. The gang has plain American names, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley, with one nickname among them, Shaggy. The dog's relatives rhyme on his surname: Scrappy-Doo, Yabba-Doo, Dooby-Doo, Ruby-Doo. The villains are titles, not names: the Creeper, Space Kook, the Ghost Clown, the Tar Monster. And the person under the mask is nearly always someone ordinary from the town, a caretaker, a banker, a professor or an heir, with a name such as Mr. Carswell.

Under a quarter of the names on this page are characters' names from the series and films, listed simply as names: Mystery Inc., the Doo family, the Hex Girls, the classic costumed villains and a few of the people behind them. It is a reference block, not a full cast list.

The rest are new and are not from any episode. They follow the same kinds: monster-of-the-week titles built on an ordinary job or local figure (The Ghost of the Night Janitor, The Phantom Plumber, The Sawdust Specter), small-town suspects (Old Man Hargrove, Professor Dinwiddie, Ringmaster Rollo), rhyming Doo relatives (Snoozy-Doo, Derring-Doo), and teen sleuths, dogs and vans for a mystery gang of your own, such as Wendell "Specs" Tuttle and The Riddle Wagon. Everything stays costume-and-cobwebs spooky.

How to choose Scooby-Doo names

  • Build a monster from a job and a place. A Scooby-Doo villain is scary because it is local: a ghost with a trade or a phantom with a workplace, as in The Phantom of the Pretzel Factory.
  • Name the culprit before the monster. Decide who is under the mask, say Rival Hotelier Conrad Snipe, and the costume and the motive follow from the job.
  • For a Doo relative, keep two beats before the hyphen and let the first word carry the joke: Hiccup-Doo, Biscuit-Doo, Yodel-Doo.
  • Give your own gang plain first and last names and one nickname that says what that member does, like Marvin "Flashlight" Boone.
  • Add a van. A gang sounds complete once it has something to drive, whether The Clue Cruiser or The Whodunit Wagon.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the Scooby-Doo characters?

The gang is Scooby-Doo, Shaggy Rogers (full name Norville Rogers), Fred Jones, Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley, known together as Mystery Inc. Scooby's relatives include Scrappy-Doo, Scooby-Dum, Yabba-Doo, Dooby-Doo and Ruby-Doo, and the Hex Girls are Thorn, Dusk and Luna.

Who are the classic Scooby-Doo villains?

The best-known costumed villains include the Creeper, Space Kook, the Ghost Clown, Miner Forty-Niner, Captain Cutler's Ghost, the Black Knight, the Snow Ghost, the Tar Monster and the 10,000 Volt Ghost. All of them are in the list under those names.

Which names here are from the show and which are new?

Names such as Velma Dinkley, Scrappy-Doo, Thorn, the Creeper and Mr. Carswell are characters' names from the series and films. Names such as The Ghost of the Night Janitor, Old Man Hargrove, Snoozy-Doo and The Riddle Wagon are new and only follow the style. This is a fan page with no link to the studio that owns the series.

Can I use the new names for a party, a game or my own mystery story?

Yes, that is what they are for: mystery parties, tabletop games, school plays and stories about your own gang. The monsters are spooky in the costume-and-cobwebs way, so they suit young players. If you plan to publish, check a name for yourself first, because nothing here has been cleared for commercial use.
