Find a cool call name for a Rottweiler: South German names like Gunther, Brunhilde and Wendelin, Roman names like Flavius, Octavia and Centurion, drover and guild words like Thaler and Meister, coat names like Mahogany and Onyx, and gentle-giant jokes like Cupcake and Schätzle.

About Rottweiler names

The Rottweiler is named after Rottweil, a town on the Neckar in Swabia, in the southwest of Germany. The Romans knew the place as Arae Flaviae, and breed tradition holds that the dogs descend from the drover dogs that followed the legions and their cattle over the Alps. In Rottweil they drove livestock to market and pulled butchers' carts, which earned them the name Rottweiler Metzgerhund, the butcher's dog of Rottweil.

That history gives the list its three leading groups. German given names lean South German and Swabian, with old names such as Gunther, Eberhard, Brunhilde and Kunigunde next to everyday short forms like Sepp, Resi, Vroni and Karle. Roman names cover first names, family names and ranks: Titus, Flavius, Cassius, Octavia, Livia, Centurion, Tribune, Legate. The trade group has the carters, the guilds and the old coins of the cattle market: Drover, Wagner, Meister, Thaler, Gulden, Kreuzer.

The rest describes the dog in front of you. There are black and mahogany coat names (Onyx, Ember, Chestnut), Swabian food (Brezel, Spätzle, Maultasche), size names that stay friendly (Atlas, Boulder, Ox), guardian titles (Warden, Steward, Kastellan), and ironic names for a big dog that thinks it fits on a lap, such as Cupcake, Tiny and Wonneproppen. Every group includes names for females.

How to choose Rottweiler names

  • Say a German name out loud before you settle on it. Spätzle sounds like shpets-leh, the J in Jakob is a y sound, and the W in Wendelin and Waltraud is a v sound.
  • The ending -le is the Swabian way to make something small and dear, as in Karle, Fritzle, Schätzle and Herzle. On a dog that size it is also a good joke.
  • Keep the call name to one or two syllables and use the long form for fun. Thusnelda can be Nelda, Federahannes can be Hannes and Pumpernickel can be Nickel.
  • Match the group to the dog. A calm, watchful Rottweiler suits Steward, Castellan or Chatelaine, a working cart or drafting dog suits Drover, Carter or Teamster, and the family clown suits Krümel, Moppel or Couch Potato.
  • For a pair, take two names from one group without a rhyme: Titus and Livia, Thaler and Gulden, Brezel and Strudel, or Feldberg and Lemberg.

Frequently asked questions

What are cool names for a male Rottweiler?

The strongest picks come from the breed's own history: Gunther, Wolfgang, Eberhard and Wendelin from southern Germany, Flavius, Cassius, Titus and Germanicus from Rome, and Drover, Carter, Thaler and Meister from the cattle trade. For plain size, Atlas, Granite, Colossus and Ox do the job without sounding fierce.

What are good names for a female Rottweiler?

Brunhilde, Kunigunde, Thusnelda, Resi and Vroni are German choices, and Octavia, Aurelia, Livia, Flavia and Drusilla are Roman ones. Mahogany, Ember and Sable suit the coat, and titles such as Chatelaine, Kaiserin and Baronin suit a dog that runs the house.

Why do Roman names suit a German breed?

Rottweil stands on the site of the Roman town Arae Flaviae, and the breed's tradition traces it to the drover dogs that came north with the legions. That descent is tradition, not proven record, but it is why names like Flavius, Flavia, Centurion, Legion, Cohort and Limes feel at home on a Rottweiler.

Is any name in the list from a book or film?

One is. Carl is the Rottweiler of the Good Dog, Carl picture books, and he is in the list as a nod to those books. The other names are general ideas. They include Gschell, Schantle and Federahannes, three figures of the Rottweil carnival, and Eschach and Prim, two small rivers that join the Neckar at the town.
