Generate dog names from India, each a real word, pet name or given name, most with a short meaning: classics like Sheru (lion-like) and Moti (pearl), funny food names like Laddu, Jalebi and Samosa, plus Raja, Rani, Bijli (lightning), Toofan (storm) and Heera (diamond).

About Indian dog names

These are dog names from the country of India, not Native American names. Every entry is a real word, pet name or given name used there, and most carry a short English meaning in parentheses. Unlabeled words are mostly Hindi or Urdu, plus dish and place names used across India. Words from other languages are labeled, such as Chellam (darling, Tamil), Pillu (pup, Marathi), Shona (gold, a Bengali darling) and Gabru (strapping lad, Punjabi). Spellings follow plain Indian English usage, without accent marks.

The list starts from the names Indian lanes and courtyards already use: Sheru (lion-like), Moti (pearl), Kalu and Bhura for black and brown coats, and borrowed English regulars such as Tommy and Tiger. Food is the largest group and the funniest: Laddu, Jalebi, Samosa, Kulfi, Biryani, Elaichi, Chai. Around it are royal titles such as Raja, Rani and Nawab, weather words such as Bijli (lightning) and Toofan (storm), animals, gems, hill stations, instruments, cricket terms, family words such as Chacha (uncle), and a few film characters marked with their film.

Many Hindi words change with gender, which helps when choosing. An ending in -a often marks the masculine and -i the feminine: Sunehra and Sunehri for golden, Laadla and Laadli for pampered, Raja and Rani. Plenty of words, such as Toofan, Kesar and Dost, suit any dog.

How to choose Indian dog names

  • Say it the way you would call across a park. Two syllables ending in a vowel, such as Sheru, Moti, Laddu, Rani and Bijli, carry well and are easy for a dog to pick out.
  • Let the coat choose: Kalu for a black coat, Bhura or Badami for brown, Safed or Chitti for white, Sunehri for golden, Chitkabra for spots and Jhabru for anything shaggy.
  • Match the ending if the grammar matters at home. Raja, Laadla and Sunehra are masculine forms, while Rani, Laadli and Sunehri are feminine.
  • The part in parentheses is a translation to help you choose, not part of the name. Read it before you commit: Bhukkad (always hungry) and Nautanki (drama queen) are affectionate teasing, so pick one that will still feel kind in ten years.
  • If people at home speak Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or another Indian language, try the name on them first. A word that is neutral in one region can sound odd in another, and some families prefer not to give a pet a person's name.

Frequently asked questions

What are cool Indian dog names?

Short, strong words are the usual pick: Sheru (lion-like), Toofan (storm), Bijli (lightning), Sultan (sovereign), Baaz (hawk) and Sikandar (Alexander, the conqueror). Titles such as Nawab, Badshah and Kaptaan work the same way. All 1,000 entries are real words or names used in India.

What are funny Indian dog names?

Food does most of the work. Laddu, Jalebi, Samosa, Pakora, Rasgulla and Kulfi are all in the list, along with habit words such as Bhukkad (always hungry), Petu (big eater), Nautanki (drama queen) and Chor (thief). The joke is the word itself, said with affection.

Which names suit a male or a female dog?

For a male dog, try Sheru, Raja, Bahadur (brave), Gabbar, Motu or Laddu. For a female, try Rani, Bijli, Chandni (moonlight), Basanti, Jalebi or Laadli (pampered girl). Many Hindi words come in pairs, so Sunehra becomes Sunehri and Dulara becomes Dulari, and food, place and weather names suit either.

Which languages are the names from?

Most are Hindi or Urdu and carry no label. Words from other Indian languages are marked in the entry, for example Kutty (little one, Tamil and Malayalam), Bujji (tiny one, Telugu), Puchku (tiny one, Bengali) and Karnail (colonel, Punjabi). Fifteen entries are English names long used for dogs in India, such as Tommy and Tiger, and they are labeled too.
