Rose Name Generator
Names with rose in them, from Rosalie to Rosethorn
Generate 1,000 rose names: given names built on Rose and Rosa (Rosalie, Rosabel, Rosetta), words for rose from other languages (Róisín, Vered, Ruusu), surnames like Montrose and Rosenthal, pet names, gothic names such as Rosethorn, and invented variety-style names like Crimson Sonnet for a garden rose.
About rose names
Rose has been used as a given name in English since the Middle Ages, and it sits inside a large family: Rosa in Latin, Spanish and Italian, pet forms such as Rosie, Rosita and Rosina, and longer forms and blends like Rosalie, Rosabel and Rosanna. Other languages have their own word for the flower, and many use it as a name: Róisín (Irish), Rhosyn (Welsh), Vered (Hebrew), Warda (Arabic), Ruusu (Finnish), Roos (Dutch), Vard (Armenian), Jangmi (Korean), Mawar (Malay) and Rhoda, from the Greek rhodon.
Not every name that sounds like rose means rose. Rosalind and Rosamund have Germanic roots (hros, horse), Rosemary comes from the Latin for dew of the sea, Ambrose from a Greek word for immortal, and Penrose and Melrose from Celtic place names. A primrose is not a rose either. They are here for the sound.
The 1,000 names run in a dozen styles: given names, words for rose from other languages, a small set of double names like Clara-Rose, surnames and house names (Montrose, Rosenthal, Desrosiers, Rosehall), pet names, gothic and fantasy names (Rosethorn, Blackrose), rose classes and shades (Damask, Rugosa, Blush) and variety-style names for a garden rose such as Crimson Sonnet. The variety-style names are invented, apart from a few long-grown roses named in the questions below.
How to choose rose names
- For a baby, decide first whether you want the meaning or the sound: Rosa, Róisín, Vered and Rhoda mean rose, while Rosalind, Rosemary and Ambrose only carry the syllable.
- Rose is a very common middle name in English. For a pairing that stands out, put a longer form such as Rosalie, Rosamund or Rosabel in the middle spot, or use Rose first with a long middle name, as in Rose Evangeline or Rose Genevieve.
- Naming a rose bush in your own garden? Pick a variety-style name that fits its color and habit, such as Apricot Reverie for a soft orange shrub or Stonewall Climber for the one on the wall. If you have bred a new rose, look the name up in a rose register before you use it: an invented name here may match a rose that already exists.
- For a gothic or fantasy character, set a soft given name against a hard surname or title: Lady Rosalva Thorne, Rosamund Wintermourn, Knight of the Pale Rose.
- Pets answer best to one or two syllables, so shorten the long ones when you call them: Rosebud to Bud, Rosalita to Rosie.
Frequently asked questions
What names mean rose?
Rosa, Rose and Roza carry the Latin word, and many languages have their own: Róisín (Irish), Rhosyn (Welsh), Vered and Varda (Hebrew), Warda (Arabic), Gul (Persian, and Gül in Turkish), Ruusu (Finnish), Roos (Dutch), Vard (Armenian), Jangmi (Korean), Mawar (Malay), Kulap (Thai) and Roja (Tamil). Rhoda comes from rhodon, the Greek word for rose.
Which names have rose in them but do not mean rose?
Rosalind and Rosamund are Germanic names built on hros, horse, that were later read as Latin for pretty rose and pure rose. Rosemary is from ros marinus, dew of the sea, Ambrose is from a Greek word for immortal, and Penrose and Melrose come from Celtic place names. Primrose is a different flower: the name goes back to prima rosa, first rose, but the plant is a primula. A few other plants carry the word without being roses, among them Desert Rose, Christmas Rose, Rockrose and Tuberose, and the German Alpenrose and Seerose are a rhododendron and a water lily.
Are the variety names real rose cultivars?
Fourteen entries are real roses that gardeners have grown for a long time: Rosa Mundi, Maiden's Blush, Old Blush, Autumn Damask, Apothecary's Rose, Tuscany Superb, Ispahan, Kazanlik, Mutabilis, Buff Beauty, New Dawn, Veilchenblau, Canary Bird and Golden Wings. The other variety-style names, such as Crimson Sonnet and Harvest Vesper, were made up for this list in the manner of catalog names, and some may happen to match a rose that is sold somewhere. The list also holds a few botanical species names such as Rosa Canina and Rosa Rugosa. Rosa Nocturna, Rosa Obscura, Rosa Mortis and Rosa Sanguine belong to the gothic set and are not species.
What is a cool rose name for a character or a pet?
For characters, the gothic set has Rosethorn, Blackrose, Rosemourn and The Withered Rose, and the full names include Ambrose Rosier and Primrose Vale. For pets, Rosebud, Rosehip, Bramble and Sir Thornsalot are short and easy to call.
